Four Crusaders Earn All-Patriot League Honors
WORCESTER, Mass. – Four Holy Cross baseball student-athletes earned All-Patriot League recognition, as voted on by the conference's head coaches. Senior first baseman Anthony Critelli was named first team All-Patriot League, while senior George Capen, junior Thomas Russo and freshman Austin Masel earned second team honors. In addition, Masel was named the conference's Rookie of the Year.
Masel becomes the fourth player in program history to be named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year, and the first since junior Cam O'Neill earned the honor in 2015. One of the top offensive players on the team this season, he led the Crusaders with a .321 batting average and 30 runs scored. Masel also posted a .386 on-base percentage with a .442 slugging percentage. Starting in all 44 games this season, he drove in 25 runs during the regular season while hitting eight doubles and four home runs.
Critelli earned first team All-Patriot League honors for the third-straight season. During the regular season, he led the Crusaders with a slugging percentage of .482 while tying for second on the team with a .291 batting average. He notched 25 runs batted in with 23 runs scored, nine doubles and six home runs. Critelli also posted a .990 fielding percentage with 259 putouts on the year. He currently ranks second all-time in program history with 22 career home runs and 49 career doubles.
Capen earned All-Patriot League honors for the first time in his career. This season, he led the Crusaders with 21 appearances in relief, and pitched a total of 33.1 innings. Capen held a record of 4-1 and earned two saves on the year. He also ranked third on the Crusaders with a total of 37 strikeouts during the regular season, and held opposing batters to a collective batting average of .260. Capen holds the school record for career pitching appearances with 92.
Russo earned All-Patriot League honors for the first time in his career. The third baseman tied for second on the Crusaders with a .291 batting average, and posted the third-best on-base percentage on the team at .377. Appearing in all 44 games on the year, he registered 19 runs batted in while scoring 21 runs and hitting seven doubles. Russo also ranked third on the Crusaders with 76 putout assists on the year.
Holy Cross returns to action this weekend, as the Crusaders play host to Army West Point in the Patriot League Semifinals. They will begin a best-of-three series with the Black Knights with a doubleheader this Saturday, May 13, beginning at 1:05 p.m. at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
