Smith joined the Crusaders in January of 2018, after spending more than five years as director of athletics at Worcester-based Assumption College. He oversaw 24 NCAA Division II varsity programs and more than 540 student-athletes in his five years at the helm with the Greyhounds, where he led the athletics department to a number of impressive advancements. At Assumption, Smith orchestrated a dramatic jump in philanthropy and fundraising, as well as continuous improvements in the Greyhounds’ Northeast-10 Conference President’s Cup standings. During his tenure, Assumption teams won six conference championships and made nine NCAA tournament appearances while also excelling in the classroom with an Academic Success Rate ranked in the nation’s top-15 for seven-straight years.

He was also a member of the Division II national football committee, where he served as a co-chair of the regional advisory committee for three years.

Prior to arriving at Assumption, Smith spent nine years at Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., serving in a variety of roles, including assistant and associate director of athletics. With the Skyhawks, Smith managed all aspects of the department’s budget and provided administrative oversight for multiple varsity programs. Smith has also spent time working with the Contemporary Services Corporation at Gillette Stadium and at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I.

A 2000 graduate of Southern New Hampshire University, Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management and was a four-year member of the men’s lacrosse team, serving as captain in his senior season. He went on to earn his master’s degree in business administration from Bryant in 2002.

Smith currently lives in North Smithfield, R.I., with his wife, Melissa, and daughters, Alyson and Emily.
