Volleyball Falls To Central Connecticut In Five-Set Thriller

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior co-captain Samantha Surface (Fresno, Calif.) and sophomore setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each earned their first double-doubles of the season, but it was not enough as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Central Connecticut, 3-2, by scores of 23-25, 25-11, 25-15, 23-25 and 15-13, at the Holy Cross Field House on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-6, while the Blue Devils improve to 3-2.

Surface was outstanding on offense and defense as she had 14 kills and a career-best 14 digs for her third career double-double, while O'Donnell had 39 assists and 14 digs for her fourth career double-double. O'Donnell was also strong at the net with one block solo and five block assists. Junior Liz Auger (Barnstable, Mass.) recorded 14 kills and freshman Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) was impressive with nine kills. Sophomore libero Angela Chisholm (Millis, Mass.) also had a career-night with 18 digs. Freshman Mallaigh McGinley (Amity Harbor, N.Y.) was a key contributor at net for Holy Cross with one block solo and four block assists, while freshman Libby Malloy (Stratford, Conn.) added five kills.

The Blue Devils were led by Lauren Snyder who had a double-double with 18 kills and 13 digs, while Amanda Bayer had 43 assists.

After trailing 9-4 in the first set, the Crusaders scored five straight points to tie the set at 9-9. With the score then tied at 23-23, Auger gave Holy Cross a 24-23 lead with a kill. The Crusaders then won the set after an attack error by Central Connecticut.

The Blue Devils then took the next two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-15. With the fourth set tied at 23-23, Surface gave Holy Cross a one-point advantage with a kill and then Auger ended the set with a kill to force a fifth set. With the final set tied at 13-13, Central Connecticut scored two straight points to clinch the victory.

The Crusaders return to action on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13, when they host the Crusader Classic at the Holy Cross Field House. On Friday, the Crusaders will play Providence at 7:00 p.m., while on Saturday, Holy Cross will meet Wagner at 1:00 p.m. and Bryant at 7:00 p.m.
