Holy Cross Volleyball Defeats Wagner In Five Sets

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Liz Auger (Barnstable, Mass.) had a career-best 26 kills and sophomore setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded her second double-double of the season and the fifth of her career with 43 assists and 12 digs, as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Wagner, 3-2, by scores of 25-15, 25-21, 26-28, 24-26 and 15-9, on the second day of the Crusader Classic at the Holy Cross Field House on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 1-7, while the Seahawks fall to 1-6. Holy Cross will conclude play in the Crusader Classic on Saturday night, when it meets Bryant at 7:00 p.m.

Auger was outstanding as she recorded a .426 hitting percentage. Junior co-captain Samantha Surface (Fresno, Calif.) also had a strong match with 16 kills, while freshmen Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) and Mallaigh McGinley (Amity Harbor, N.Y.) each had seven kills. Holy Cross was impressive defensively as senior Molly Anderson (Weston, Conn.) had 16 digs, sophomore libero Angela Chisholm (Millis, Mass.) had 15 digs and junior Liz Campbell (Mineola, N.Y.) had a career-best 13 digs.

The Seahawks were led by Alex Klein's double-double of 19 kills and 15 digs, while Laura Bellotti also had a double-double with 43 assists and 10 digs. Stephanie Robinett also had an outstanding match with a double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs.

Holy Cross began the match strong, going on an 8-0 run early in the first set. Led by kills from Surface, McGinley and Auger, the Crusaders went up 12-6 and did not look back for the rest of the set. After a series of attack errors on Wagner, Holy Cross defeated the Seahawks with a score of 25-15.

With the Crusaders trailing, 18-17 in the second set, Auger had three kills in a row to give Holy Cross a 20-18 lead. The Crusaders went onto win the set, 25-21.

Wagner would go onto win the next two sets by only two points each, forcing the match to go into a fifth game.

In the final set, the score went back and forth in the early going until two attack errors and a kill from Auger gave Holy Cross the 7-4 advantage. The Crusaders capitalized on their advantage even further, with kills from Colpoys and Auger, improving the lead to 12-6. Holy Cross maintained its lead for the remainder of the set, with a final kill from Surface ending the set and ending the match.
