VILLANOVA, Pa.- Senior setter Chrissy Fanning (East Amherst, N.Y.), junior Christine Strawson (Torrington, Conn.) and freshman Samantha Surface (Fresno, Calif.) each recorded double-doubles but it was not enough as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Maryland-Baltimore County, 3-1, by scores of 30-26, 30-24, 25-30 and 30-17, in non-conference action at the Villanova Classic, on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 1-9 overall, while the Retrievers improve to 6-6 overall. Holy Cross concludes play in the tournament this afternoon when it faces Sacred Heart at 4:00 p.m.

Fanning posted her third double-double of the season with 52 assists and 14 digs, while Strawson recorded her fourth double-double with 20 kills and 16 digs. Surface had a solid match to register her first double-double of her collegiate career with 11 kills and 10 digs.

Freshman Liz Auger (Barnstable, Mass.) had an outstanding offensive match with 18 kills, while the Crusaders were strong on defense as senior libero Valerie Mora (San Antonio, Texas) recorded 26 digs and sophomore Molly Anderson (Weston, Conn.) had 23 digs. Mora now has 997 career digs at Holy Cross which is currently third on the all-time list at the school. Junior Meagan Merinder (Andover, Mass.) was strong at the net with five total blocks.

UMBC was led by Ashley Hargrove's 16 kills and Sarah Ball's 15 kills and 23 digs. Kira Giles had 54 assists, while Jennifer Wylie was strong defensively with 32 digs.
