DURHAM, N.H. – Morgan Thatcher posted 16 kills and tallied a .577 hitting percentage for the Wildcats as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to New Hampshire, 3-0, at the Holly Young Invitational at Lundholm Gymnasium on Friday night by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-11. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-7 overall, while the Wildcats improve to 3-5 overall. The Crusaders continue play in the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they will meet William & Mary at 10:00 a.m. and Central Connecticut at 4:30 p.m. Central Connecticut defeated William & Mary by a 3-2 score in the first match of the tournament.

Senior captain Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) led the Crusaders with 12 kills, while she also posted six digs. Sophomore Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) just missed a double-double with 22 assists and nine digs. Senior captain Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) tallied five digs, giving her 998 for her career. Sophomore Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) posted six kills, while senior Callie Black (Fallon, Nev.) led the team with two blocks.

The Wildcats were very accurate on the night as they recorded a .375 hitting percentage. Taylor Dunklau posted 34 assists for the Wildcats and Jessie Schnepp recorded 16 digs. Thatcher was also strong at net defensively as she had a team-best three blocks.

With the first set tied at 10-10, UNH won six of the next eight points to move out to a 16-12 advantage. Following a Crusader timeout, Lynch recorded a kill to make the score 16-13, but the Wildcats then won seven of the next nine points for a 23-15 lead. After the Crusaders won three straight points, New Hampshire secured the next two for the 25-18 opening-set victory. Thatcher posted six kills and a recorded a .667 hitting percentage. Lynch led Holy Cross will four kills. With the Wildcats leading the second set, 16-10, the Crusaders won five consecutive points to pull within one point at 16-15. But UNH would take nine of the last 13 points for the 25-19 win. Thatcher tallied another six kills, while Lynch posted four and a .444 hitting percentage. New Hampshire controlled the third set and earned the sweep of the match with a 25-11 win. Thatcher tallied four kills on five attempts with no errors for an outstanding .800 hitting percentage.
