NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Aleksandra Wachowicz led the Red Storm with 13 kills and Gabriela Petkova posted 18 digs as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to St. John's, 3-0, at the Central Connecticut Invitational at Detrick Gym on Saturday by scores of 25-19, 25-7 and 25-22. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-6 overall, while the Red Storm improve to 7-1 overall.

St. John's won the tournament with a 3-0 record. Brown went 2-1, Central Connecticut went 1-2 and Holy Cross went 0-3. Crusader freshman Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) was named to the All-Tournament team. She posted 19 kills, three aces, four digs and four blocks during the tournament, including 12 kills versus Brown on Aug. 31.

Senior Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) led the Crusaders with seven kills, while senior Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) tallied 11 digs. Watters now has 993 career digs. Junior Christiana Blakeslee (Ashtabula, Ohio) led the team with 10 assists and three aces. Senior Liz Ashton (Milford, Mass.) and sophomore Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) each tallied three blocks.

Sabina Piegza totaled 28 assists for the Red Storm. Milica Krstojevic also had a strong match with eight kills and a .429 hitting percentage.

With the Crusaders trailing by a 20-18 score in the first set, the Red Storm won five of the next six points for the 25-19 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Wachowicz led the Red Storm with five kills. After St. John's won the first eight points of the second set, the Red Storm won eight of the next nine points to take a 16-1 lead. The Red Storm would go onto win the set by a 25-7 score and record a .500 hitting percentage. With St. John's leading 24-18 in the third set, the Crusaders won four straight points to cut the lead to two at 24-22. But Kerri Johnson tallied a kill on the Red Storm's fifth match point to secure the three-set victory.   

The Crusaders return to action when they play at New Hampshire's Holly Young Invitational in Durham, N.H., on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8. On Friday, the Crusaders will meet New Hampshire at 7:00 p.m., while on Saturday they will play William & Mary at 10:00 a.m. and Central Connecticut at 4:30 p.m.
