Volleyball Posts 3-1 Win Versus Bucknell
WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomores Heather Roberts (San Jose, Calif.) and Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) each posted double-doubles as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Bucknell, 3-1, at the Holy Cross Field House in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon by scores of 25-23, 26-24, 21-25 and 25-22. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 1-17 overall (1-3 PL), while the Bison fall to 6-11 overall (1-3 PL).
Roberts tallied 14 kills and 10 digs for her first career double-double. Her 14 kills were also a career best. Stokes posted her fourth double-double of the season and the 13th of her career with 40 assists and 10 digs. Stokes also tallied a career-best seven aces and added five kills with a .455 hitting percentage. Senior captain Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) led the team with 22 digs, while sophomore Julia Gould (Ridgewood, N.J.) had 11 digs as four Crusaders posted double-digit digs. Watters now has 1,173 career digs moving her to fourth on the school's all-time digs list. Sophomore Mary-Kate Short (Lighthouse Point, Fla.) and freshman Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) each tallied three blocks. Oliver had nine kills and sophomore Kamele Shizuru (Kailua, Hawaii) posted a career-best seven kills.
Kat Tauscher and Claire Healy each posted double-doubles for the Bison. Tauscher tallied 41 assists and 10 digs, while Healy led the team with 14 kills and 18 digs. Karen Campbell was strong at the net with six blocks. Kebah Edoho had 12 kills and Katie Price posted 15 digs. Edoho led the team with three aces.
With the Crusaders trailing 22-16 in the first set, Holy Cross won four straight points to cut the Bucknell lead to 22-20. After the Bison won the next point to take a three-point advantage at 23-20, Oliver and junior Alex Aycock (Jonesboro, Ark.) posted kills to make the score 23-22. After an attach error by the Bison, Aycock gave the Crusaders a set-point with a kill. The Crusaders clinched the 25-23 win when Oliver and senior Liz Ashton (Milford, Mass.) blocked a Bucknell attack attempt. Aycock and Roberts each tallied four kills for the set.
Trailing by a 24-22 score and down two set points, the Crusaders rallied to win four straight to earn a 26-24 second-set victory. After a kill by Roberts, Stokes posted two straight aces to give Holy Cross a set point. Then Oliver tallied her sixth kill of the set to give the Crusaders the 2-0 lead in the match. Roberts also earned six kills for the set, while Healy led the Bison with five kills. Bucknell forced a fourth set with a 25-21 third-set win as it was led by Edoho who had five kills. With the fourth set tied at 21-21, Stokes posted three consecutive aces to give the Crusaders a 24-21 advantage. After an attack error by the Crusaders, the Bison then had an attack error of their own as Holy Cross posted a 25-22 win to secure the match.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 when they travel to West Point, N.Y., to play Army at 7:30 p.m. at Gillis Field House.
