WORCESTER, Mass. – With the Crusaders trailing 24-18 in the fourth set and facing five match points, they then won eight straight to force a fifth and deciding set, but the Hawks were able to secure the match by winning the fifth as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Hartford, 3-2, at the Holy Cross Field House on Tuesday night by scores of 22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 24-26 and 15-5. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-10 overall, while the Hawks improve to 4-8 overall.

Junior Christiana Blakeslee (Ashtabula, Ohio) and sophomore Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) each posted double-doubles. Blakeslee tallied 24 assists and 10 digs for her second career double-double, while Stokes totaled 16 assists and 12 digs for her first double-double of the season and the 10th of her career. Senior captain Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) led the Crusaders with 15 kills and freshman Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) posted nine kills. Senior captain Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) secured 25 digs, while Blakeslee and Oliver each totaled four blocks.  

The Hawks had three players with double-doubles. Sareeta Nethersole tallied 17 kills and 17 digs, Dionna Kirton posted 12 kills and 14 digs, and Jackie Tamburri totaled 45 assists and 12 digs. The Hawks had five players with double-digit digs as Saara Carissimi had 13 digs and Kami Nethersole posted 10. Lindsay Anderson was strong at the net with five blocks.    

The Crusaders took the first set by a score of 25-22 as Lynch led the team with seven kills. With the second set tied at 20-20, Hartford won five of the last six points to earn a 25-21 victory. Kirton secured the win with a kill on set point. The Hawks won the third set, 25-19, and were led by Kirton who tallied four kills. With the Crusaders down 24-19 in the fourth set, sophomore Heather Roberts (San Jose, Calif.) posted a kill. Following an attack error by the Hawks, Oliver tallied a kill and then the Crusaders forced another error to make the score 24-22. Holy Cross then tied the set at 24-24 with kills by Roberts and Oliver. After an attack error by the Hawks gave the Crusaders a set point, Oliver forced a fifth set with a kill giving the Crusaders a 26-24 win. Roberts posted six kills for the set and Oliver tallied five. The Hawks jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the fifth. After two points by the Crusaders, the Hawks won the last two including clinching the five-set victory with a kill by Kathryn Gawrych on match point.

The Crusaders return to action when they travel to Smithfield, R.I., to compete in Bryant's Hampton Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14-15. On Friday, the Crusaders will play Akron at 6:00 p.m., while on Saturday they will meet Northern Kentucky at 10:00 a.m. and Bryant at 7:00 p.m.
