Holy Cross Volleyball Falls To Central Connecticut, 3-1

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Freshman Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and a season-best 20 digs, but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Central Connecticut, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Detrick Gymnasium by scores of 25-18, 25-23, 21-25 and 26-24. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 1-8 overall while CCSU improves to 3-4 on the season.

Junior setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 37 assists, while sophomore Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) tallied the second most kills on the team with nine. Colpoys led the Crusaders with four service aces. Junior libero Angela Chisholm (Millis, Mass.) and freshman Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) each had strong defensive performances as Chisholm recorded 17 digs and Watters had 12. Both Chisholm and Watters each have posted double-digit digs four times this season.

CCSU was led by Maite Mendizabal who had 16 kills and Amanda Bayer who had 38 assists and 15 digs for a double-double. Kaitlin Petrella had 17 digs.

After CCSU won the first set 25-18, the second set came down to the last couple of points, but CCSU was able to win the set by a score of 25-23. With the second set tied at 20-20, Central Connecticut won three straight points to make the score 23-20, but the Crusaders responded with two points to cut the lead to 23-22. After a point by CCSU, Holy Cross made it a 24-23 set with a kill by Lynch, but a kill by Mendizabal gave CCSU the win. The Crusaders had a strong third set as they moved out to a 20-12 advantage and won the set by a score of 25-21 as junior Rebecca DeSanti (Hampden, Mass.) clinched the victory with a kill. With Holy Cross trailing 24-21 during the fourth set, they scored three straight points to tie the set at 24-24, but CCSU won the next two points to earn the set and the match. 

The Crusaders return to action when they compete at the Brown Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18-19. Holy Cross will meet tournament host Brown on Friday at 7:30 p.m., while on Saturday it will take on Stony Brook at 1:00 p.m. and Brown for a second time at 4:00 p.m.
