Holy Cross Volleyball Defeated By American, 3-1
WORCESTER, Mass. - Three Crusaders tallied double-digit kills, but the Eagles had four players with double-digit kills as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to American, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Holy Cross Field House by scores of 25-16, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-18. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-19 overall (1-6 Patriot League), while the Eagles improve to 11-10 (4-3 Patriot League).
Sophomore Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) led the Crusaders with 13 kills, while senior Samantha Surface (Fresno, Calif.) recorded 12 kills and nine digs, and freshman Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) tallied 11 kills. Lynch has posted double-digit kills 14 times this season. Junior setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had an outstanding match with 39 assists and 12 digs for her seventh double-double of the season and the 18th of her career. Freshman Callie Black (Fallon, Nev.) recorded nine kills and freshman Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) had nine digs.
American was led by Angelina Waterman who had 19 kills and Magdalena Tekiel who had 18 kills and 17 digs for a double-double. Krysta Cicala had a strong match with 59 assists, while Cynammon Burns was impressive with 21 digs. Cassandra Ricketts recorded 14 kills and Claire Recht posted 13 kills.
After losing the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-18, the Crusaders answered with a 25-23 third-set victory. With Holy Cross leading 24-21, the Eagles won two straight points to make the score 24-23. After a Crusader timeout, Lynch recorded a kill to give Holy Cross the win. The Eagles bounced back and won the fourth set by a score of 25-18 to clinch the match.
The Crusaders return to action when they play two Patriot League matches at the Holy Cross Field House with Bucknell on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7:00 p.m. and Colgate on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 2:00 p.m.
