Volleyball Drops 3-2 Season-Opening Match To Providence

WORCESTER, Mass.­ - Junior libero Angela Chisholm (Millis, Mass.) recorded a career-best 22 digs and sophomore Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) had a career-best 13 kills, but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Providence, 3-2, in the season-opener for the Crusaders on Wednesday night at the Holy Cross Field House, by scores of 25-23, 20-25, 25-14, 19-25 and 15-9. With the loss, Holy Cross starts the season 0-1 overall, while the Friars improve to 2-2 overall.

Junior setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also had a solid match with 38 assists. Freshman Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) had an impressive debut as she just missed a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs, while freshman Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) was strong as she reached double-digit digs with 11. Freshman Callie Black (Fallon, Nev.) had the third most kills for the Crusaders with seven.

Providence was led by Abby Majewski who had 17 kills, while Carly Morrison had 31 assists.

With the first set tied at 20-20, Providence won four straight points to move out to a 24-20 lead. After the Crusaders made the score 24-23 with three straight points, the Friars won the set with a kill by Majewski. Holy Cross came back to win the second set 25-20 with the last two points on kills by O'Donnell and sophomore Libby Malloy (Stratford, Conn.). After Providence won the third set, 25-14, the Crusaders took the fourth set by a score of 25-19. With the score tied at 18-18, Holy Cross tallied five straight points to make the score 23-18. After the Friars cut the lead to 23-19, the Crusaders took the last two points to force a fifth set. With Holy Cross trailing 11-9, Providence rattled off four straight points to secure the victory.   

The Crusaders return to action when they travel to Fairfield, Conn., to compete at the Sacred Heart Invitational on Sept. 4-5. On Friday, Holy Cross will meet tournament host Sacred Heart at 7:00 p.m., while on Saturday the Crusaders will play Iona at 12:00 p.m. and Missouri-Kansas City at 2:00 p.m.
