Volleyball Drops 3-2 Match To Bryant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior Alex Aycock (Jonesboro, Ark.) and sophomore Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) each tallied a career-best 15 kills but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Bryant, 3-2, on Tuesday night at the Chace Athletic Center by scores of 21-25, 22-25, 26-24, 27-25 and 16-14. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 6-11 overall, while the Bulldogs improve to 6-16 overall.

Freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) posted a season-best 48 assists, while freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) secured 28 digs. Junior captain Mary-Kate Short (Lighthouse Point, Fla.) and freshman Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) each tallied nine kills. The nine kills were a career-best for Short. Junior Hannah Grace Stokes (Atlanta, Ga.) also recorded double-digit digs with 12.

Bryant had three players earn double-doubles. Claire Van Dyk tallied 21 kills and 19 digs, while Elena Lohr posted 13 kills and 12 digs. Jana Kmec recorded 56 assists and 11 digs.

With the first set tied at 18-18, the Crusaders won seven of the next 10 points to secure a 25-21 victory. Oliver led the team with four kills. With the Crusaders leading the second set by a 23-22 score, junior captain Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) and Short each posted a kill to give Holy Cross a 25-22 win. Oliver once again led the team with four kills. Sara DePouw broke a 24-24 tie in the third set with a kill to give the Bulldogs a 25-24 lead, while Van Dyk then clinched the 26-24 third-set victory with a kill. With the Crusaders down a set point at 24-23 in the fourth, Oliver tied the score at 24-24 with a kill. After junior Kamele Shizuru (Kailua, Hawaii) gave the Crusaders a match point with a kill, Van Dyk tied the set at 25-25 with a kill. Bryant then won the next two points to force a fifth and deciding set. With the fifth set tied at 14-14, Kaitlyn Klein and Lohr each posted a kill to give the Bulldogs the 16-14 match-clinching win.        

The Crusaders return to action on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11-12, when the team will hold a "Pink For A Purpose" event at its matches against Navy and Lafayette, both at the Holy Cross Field House. The Navy match is on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and the Lafayette contest is on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Crusaders are raising money for PINK Revolution online.
