Volleyball Drops 3-1 Match To CCSU

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the Crusaders with 16 kills but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Central Connecticut, 3-1, at the Holy Cross Field House on Wednesday night in non-conference action by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-23. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 6-7 overall, while CCSU improves to 9-5 overall.

Freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) posted a season-best 45 assists, while she also tallied eight kills and a season-best four blocks. Freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) led the team with 18 digs and junior Kamele Shizuru (Kailua, Hawaii) tallied a career-best six blocks. Senior Alex Aycock (Jonesboro, Ark.) posted 11 kills and freshman Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) recorded nine kills, while junior Julia Gould (Ridgewood, N.J.) secured 13 digs.

CCSU was led by Makenna Lommori who tallied a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs, while Heather Trueman posted 14 kills and Rachel Dunlap had 11 kills. Brook Schwab tallied seven blocks and Cassidy Stankowski posted 11 digs and nine kills.

With Central Connecticut leading the first set, 24-20, the Crusaders posted two straight kills with one by McKernan and one by Aycock to cut the lead to 24-22, but Trueman clinched the set with a kill to give CCSU a 25-22 win. Welsch tallied six kills for the Crusaders. Once again CCSU had a 24-20 lead but this time a kill by Stankowski gave Central Connecticut a 25-20 second-set victory. Sifferlen posted seven kills. With the Crusaders leading the third set, 24-19, CCSU won two consecutive points, but Welsch then tallied a kill for the 25-21 win forcing a fourth set. Welsch led the team with four kills. With CCSU leading the fourth set by a 22-19 score, junior Dana Weston (Canton, Mass.) and Welsch each posted a kill to cut the lead to 22-21. But Lommori and Trueman then each tallied a kill to increase the lead to 24-21. After a kill by Welsch, an attack error by CCSU made it a 24-23 score. But Trueman concluded the match with a kill for the 25-23 fourth set win. Junior captain Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) led the Crusaders with five kills. The Crusaders are now 1-1 this season in four-set matches.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to take on Patriot League opponent Colgate at 4:00 p.m.
