Volleyball Falls To Loyola (Md.), 3-1

BALTIMORE, Md. – Freshman Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the Crusaders with 15 kills, but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Loyola (Md.), 3-1, at Reitz Arena on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action by scores of 25-17, 21-25, 27-25 and 25-12. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in the Patriot League, while the Greyhounds improve to 5-12 on the season and 2-3 in the conference.

Freshman Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) posted a match-best 30 assists, while she also tallied seven digs and three aces. Freshman Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) led the team with 23 digs, while junior captain Alicia Swearingen (Springdale, Ark.) recorded 13 digs. Sophomore Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) registered 11 kills.

Loyola was led by Faye Lukas and Lauren Andersen, both of whom tallied double-doubles with 16 kills and 13 digs, and 20 assists and 16 digs, respectively. Jac Bullock registered a match-best 19 kills, while Kelly McShea recorded 26 assists. Micah Duzey posted a team-best 25 digs.

With the match tied at 13-13 in the first set, Loyola pushed the score ahead to 18-15. The Greyhounds then closed out the first set on a 7-2 run to earn the first point of the match (25-17). Holy Cross rebounded in the second set, as it went on a 9-4 run to open up the set. Loyola worked the deficit down the 13-10, before the Crusaders erupted on a 7-3 run to grab the 20-13 lead. Holy Cross kept the advantage as it would win the second set, 25-21.

Both teams battled back-and-forth in the third set, as Holy Cross gained the largest lead of the set at 21-17. Loyola rallied back to tie the score at 21-21, before the squads traded points until 25-25, when the Greyhounds scored two consecutive points to close out the set, 27-25. The fourth set was all Loyola as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the set. Holy Cross worked the deficit to three points (13-10), before the Greyhounds exploded for a 12-3 rally to earn the set victory, 25-12.

The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 8, when they travel to Smithfield, R.I. to take on Bryant at 7:00 p.m.
