Volleyball Records 3-0 Win Over Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tallied 34 assists as she became only the second Crusader to record 3,000 career assists as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Navy, 3-0, on Friday evening at the Wesley A. Brown Field House by scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21, in Patriot League action. With the win, the Crusaders have won three out of their last four matches and improve to 8-12 overall (2-1 Patriot League), while the Midshipmen fall to 5-13 overall (0-3 Patriot League). Holy Cross' 2-1 record is its best ever start to a Patriot League season, while the Crusaders' eight total victories are already their most since going 8-19 in 2002.

O'Donnell now has 3,013 career assists as Michelle Leahy (2001-2004) holds the all-time Holy Cross record with 3,177 career assists. Sophomore Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) recorded her 13th double-double of the season and 20th of her career with 14 kills and 12 digs. Senior libero Angela Chisholm (Millis, Mass.) led the Crusaders with 16 digs as she now has 963 career digs. Junior Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) had seven kills and a team-best .400 hitting percentage, while sophomore Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) recorded nine digs. Senior Rebecca DeSanti (Hampden, Mass.) had a strong balanced match with six kills and nine digs.

Navy was led by Erin Fortner who had a triple-double with 11 kills, 16 assists and 13 digs. Nicole Salmon also had 11 kills, while Holly Berger led the Mids with 19 digs.

With Holy Cross leading 21-14 in the first set, Navy then took six of the next seven points to cut the lead to 22-20. But the Crusaders then won three out of five points including a kill by Lynch on set point for the 25-22 opening set win. Chisholm had an outstanding eight digs in the set. The Midshipmen went out to a 10-5 advantage in the second set, but Holy Cross was able to bounce back and tie the set at 16-16. With the Crusaders now leading 24-23, Colpoys recorded a kill to secure the 25-23 win. Lynch tallied six kills, O'Donnell had 13 assists and Chisholm had seven digs. With the third set tied at 15-15, Holy Cross won 10 of 16 points including a match point kill by Colpoys to give Holy Cross the 25-21 third set victory. This was Holy Cross' sixth 3-0 win of the season.

The Crusaders continue Patriot League action on Saturday, Oct. 2, when they play American in Washington, D.C., at 2:00 p.m.
