WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) notched her 11th double-double of the season and 18th of her career, and the Crusaders recorded an impressive .340 hitting percentage as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Lafayette, 3-0, on Friday evening at the Holy Cross Field House by scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-19, in the Patriot League season opener. With the victory, the Crusaders improve to 7-11 overall (1-0 Patriot League) and 5-2 at home, while the Leopards dip to 4-10 overall (0-1 Patriot League).

Since the formation of the Patriot League in 1990, this is the first time the Crusaders have ever begun the Patriot League season with a 1-0 record. The win is also Holy Cross' first over Lafayette since October 9, 2004 as the Leopards had won 11 straight matches over the Crusaders entering tonight's contest. Holy Cross' seven wins are already the most since going 7-19 in 2005.

Lynch smashed 15 kills and dug out 14 balls for the Crusaders, while she had a .444 hitting percentage with only three errors on 27 attempts. Senior setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) served up 35 assists in the effort as she also added five kills with a team-best .455 hitting percentage as she had zero errors on 11 attempts. Senior Angela Chisholm (Millis, Mass.) contributed nine digs. Junior Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) made seven kills and registered a team-best three blocks, while freshman Alex Aycock (Jonesboro, Ark.) killed seven attacks.

Lafayette was led by freshman setter Molly Belcher and senior hitter Kayly Elmer who narrowly missed double-doubles. Belcher had 16 assists and nine digs, while Elmer made 12 kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter Sarah Frohnapfel aided the Leopards with 10 assists, while freshman libero Mackenzie Larsen contributed 13 digs on the night.

The Crusaders jumped out to early leads in all three sets. With the score 23-15 in the first set a kill by Lynch and a Lafayette error sealed the deal for the 25-15 set victory. Lynch led Holy Cross with six kills, while O'Donnell had 14 assists. The Crusaders won the second set 25-21 as Lynch led the team with five kills. In the final set of the night sophomore Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) served a total of six points to help the Crusaders claim the match. This is Holy Cross' fifth three-set victory of the season.

The Crusaders return to action when they play Patriot League opponent Lehigh on Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Holy Cross Field House at 2:00 p.m.
