Volleyball Earns Five-Set Victory Over Boston College

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) and senior Rebecca DeSanti (Hampden, Mass.) each recorded double-doubles as the Holy Cross volleyball team defeated Boston College, 3-2, on Friday evening at the Bryant Invitational by scores of 17-25, 25-19, 26-28, 25-22 and 15-13. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 4-6 overall as it is their best record after 10 matches since the 2005 season, while the Eagles, who were on a four-match winning streak entering today's contest, fall to 4-4 overall. This was the Crusaders' second win over the Eagles this season as Holy Cross defeated Boston College by a 3-0 score in the season-opener for both teams on Aug. 27. Before this season the Eagles had won 15 straight over Holy Cross. The Crusaders continue action at the Bryant Invitational on Saturday when they will take on Bryant at noon and Manhattan at 5:00 p.m.

Lynch recorded her seventh double-double of the season and the 14th of her career with 21 kills and 13 digs. She has tallied double-digit kills in nine of the 10 matches this season, while she has posted double-digit digs in eight matches. DeSanti had a career night with 17 kills and 14 digs. This was her second double-double of the season and of her career. DeSanti was also very accurate on the night with a team-best .484 hitting percentage.

Senior setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 46 assists and seven kills, while freshman Christiana Blakeslee (Ashtabula, Ohio) led the Crusaders with a season-best five blocks. Sophomore Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) also had a strong match with 25 digs. Senior Angela Chisholm (Millis, Mass.) secured 13 digs, while junior Kathleen Colpoys (Scituate, Mass.) and sophomore Liz Ashton (Milford, Mass.) each recorded seven kills.

BC had three players with double-doubles and was led by Brennan Clark who earned 24 kills and 25 digs, while Tsvetelina Dureva had 19 kills and 11 digs. Val Mattaliano posted 14 kills and 10 digs, while Krissy Mussendeny had 39 assists and Kristen Baader recorded 28 digs. 

After dropping the first set by a 25-17 score, the Crusaders bounced back to take the second set, 25-19, as DeSanti led the team with eight kills. Holy Cross fought off a total of three set points but BC eventually won the third set, 28-26. The Crusaders forced a fifth and deciding set when they won the fourth frame by a 25-22 score. Holy Cross took a 10-6 lead in the final set, but the Eagles were able to cut the Crusaders lead to just one point at 13-12. After a kill by Lynch, BC won the next point making the score 14-13 in favor of Holy Cross, but the Crusaders were able to win the next point to earn the victory.
