WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross volleyball team upended Boston College in straight sets on Friday morning at the Beanpot Classic at the Holy Cross Field House in the season-opener for both teams by scores of 25-15, 25-22 and 25-16. With the win, the Crusaders start the season 1-0 overall for the first time since 2007, while the Eagles kick off the season 0-1 overall. The last time the Crusaders defeated the Eagles was a 3-1 victory on Sept. 6, 1991, as Boston College had won 15 straight over Holy Cross entering today’s match. The tournament continues for the Crusaders at 2:00 p.m. when they take on Quinnipiac, followed by a 7:00 p.m. match versus Northeastern.

Senior setter Chelsey O’Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) registered 36 assists and seven digs and sophomore Megan Lynch (Mendham, N.J.) led the attack with 15 kills, while she also had 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. Freshman Alex Aycock (Jonesboro, Ark.) registered 11 kills in her rookie debut as that was the most kills by a Holy Cross freshman in her collegiate debut since Sept. 2, 2003, when Valerie Mora recorded 13 kills versus Quinnipiac. Sophomore Elizabeth Watters (San Francisco, Calif.) pitched in with 12 digs.

The Eagles were led by junior Brennan Clark with seven kills, freshman Alex Trobbe contributed with 10 digs, while freshman Calga Sen helped with nine assists.

Set one saw the Crusaders gain the lead at 4-3 after losing the first two points and never looked back to win the first set.  The middle set was back and forth until 11-10 when Holy Cross served three points to make it 14-10 en route to the set victory.  The Eagles jumped out early in the third set 1-0 until the Crusaders made a 3-0 run.  Holy Cross later went on to serve six points in a row to put the match out of reach.  Despite being down, the Eagles served four straight points in an attempt to stay alive in the third set. Holy Cross’ balanced attack resulted double digit kills in each set, while the Eagles registered double digits in the second set.
