Sacred Heart Downs Holy Cross, 7-6

Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's lacrosse team was unable to hold onto a four-goal lead heading into the second half and dropped a 7-6 decision to Sacred Heart Thursday afternoon at the Hart Astroturf Field. Holy Cross jumped out to a three goal lead in the first eight minutes of the game, thanks to goals by Carolyn Smirti (Long Island, N.Y.) and Patricia Sutton (Saratoga Spring, N.Y.). Smirti then posted her second tally of the game just minutes later at to give HC a 3-0 cushion.
The two teams would battle for 16 more minutes before the Pioneers cut Holy Cross' lead to two when sophomore Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, N.Y.) scored the only Sacred Heart point of the half.
The Crusaders used the last minutes of the half to net two more goals, taking a 5-1 lead heading into half-time. Freshman Nikki Bolduc (Exeter, N.H.) scored her first collegiate-goal with 3:25 remaining with help from sophomore Jacque Hastings (Sewickley, Pa.). Junior Virginia Dowd (West Islip, N.Y.) posted the final marker of the stanza with 1:58 left. Senior attack Dee Dee Banel (Edmonds, Wash.) assisted on the play.
The Pioneers scored five straight in the second to take a 6-5 lead, including three free-position goals. Senior JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) started Sacred Heart's rally at 10:11 in the second on a free-position shot. Midway through the half senior Natalie Smith (Wantagh, N.Y.) dropped the Crusaders lead to 5-3 with 16:31 remaining in the game. On a free-position shot, freshman Katie Salamone (Baltimore, Md.) brought the Pioneers within one of tying the game.
Sacred Heart's Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, Pa.) evened the score at five-all by netting the Pioneers' third free-position goal of the half with 6:49 remaining. Seconds later sophomore Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, Md.) gave Sacred Heart the lead when she found the back of the net with 6:16 left in the game.
With 2:06 remaining in the game, the Crusaders tied the game, 6-6, when Bolduc posted her second goal with help from Smirti.
As the clock dropped to the one minute mark, Montesarchio gave the Pioneers their last lead of the game for a final score of 7-6.
Sophomore Megan Orr (Wilton, Conn.) made 17 saves for the Crusaders, as senior Maggie Brauer (Blauvelt, N.Y.) halted nine shots on goal for the win.
Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, March 5 when it takes on Brown in Providence, R.I. at 11:00 a.m.
