Yale Downs Holy Cross 12-3
April 5, 2006
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Kat Peetz and Lauren Taylor combined to score eight goals to lead the Yale women's lacrosse team to a 12-3 win over Holy Cross in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Johnson Field. Holy Cross falls to 8-4, as its three-game winning streak comes to an end. The Bulldogs improve to 6-5 overall.
Holy Cross junior Patricia Sutton got the visitors on the board early when she beat Yale goalie Ellen Cameron just 3:44 into the contest. The Crusaders held the 1-0 advantage for almost ten minutes before the Bulldogs opened the floodgates. Yale scored seven unanswered goals in the next 13 minutes to take a commanding 7-1 lead into the break.
The Crusaders struck first in the second half when sophomore Kristine Corkum made good on an unassisted effort to cut the lead to five (7-2), five minutes into the second stanza. The two teams then traded goals as Yale's Lara Melniker scored on a free position shot at the 21:38 mark and Holy Cross' Carolyn Smirti answered right back with a score of her own to keep the deficit at five (8-3). But the Crusaders would not get any closer as Yale tallied four consecutive goals in a span of six minutes and 29 seconds, while holding Holy Cross scoreless the rest of the way to seal the win.
Holy Cross netminder Megan Orr made a season-high 20 saves as Yale racked up 40 shots on the afternoon. Cameron earned the win with seven stops on the day.
The Crusaders travel to American in a crucial Patriot League match-up on Saturday, April 8. Both teams are undefeated in league play with just two conference games remaining before the post-season tournament.
