Holy Cross Women's Lacrosse Falls To Bucknell, 12-11

LEWISBURG, Pa. - With the contest tied at 11-11, Bucknell's Bonnie Buechel scored the game-winner with 1:09 remaining in the second half, as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to the Bison, 12-11, on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 2-8 overall (0-3 Patriot League), while the Bison improve to 8-3 overall (4-0 Patriot League).
Sophomore Meg O'Leary (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored three goals and had one assist for four points, while junior Megan Fenton (Bridgewater, N.J.) also earned four points with two goals and two assists. Junior Katie Gardner (Garden City, N.Y.) and freshman Kat Sutton (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) each had two goals and one assist for three points. Sutton's three points were a career best. Junior Ali Baird (Wilbraham, Mass.) and sophomore Annie Boylan (Andover, Mass.) each had one goal.
Carol Donohue scored two goals and had four assists for six points for Bucknell, while Buechel and Chelsea Peters each had three goals. Michelle Milot and Julia Braun each had two goals.
After the Bison took an early 2-0 lead, the Crusaders answered with four straight goals to move out to a 4-2 advantage. O'Leary and Fenton scored unassisted goals, while Baird then found the back of the net off a pass by O'Leary and then O'Leary scored an unassisted goal. But, Bucknell came back with three consecutive goals to take a 5-4 lead. Holy Cross then moved out ahead again with an unassisted goal by Gardner and a goal by O'Leary with an assist by Fenton. After Buechel tied the contest at 6-6 with 43 seconds left in the half, Boylan gave the Crusaders a 7-6 lead when she scored with just 11 seconds on the scoreboard.
Holy Cross increased its lead to 9-6 with a goal by Gardner off a pass by Sutton and a goal by Sutton off an assist by Fenton. With the score now 9-7 in favor of the Crusaders, Fenton scored to make it a 10-7 contest. Bucknell then scored four straight goals to take an 11-10 lead. Sutton tied the game at 11-11 with 12:04 on the clock. Buechel's game-winner was assisted by Donohue.
Sophomore goalie Amy Martin (Bloomfield, Mich.) made 10 saves, while Alyssa DeLorenz stopped four shots to earn the win. The Bison outshot the Crusaders, 30-19, while Holy Cross picked up nine ground balls and Bucknell had eight. The Bison earned 13 draw controls and the Crusaders had 11. Bucknell went 4-5 on free-position shots and Holy Cross went 0-3.
The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, April 1, when they play a home contest versus Yale at 4:00 p.m.
