Holy Cross Women's Lacrosse Earns 13-11 Win Over Vermont

WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior tri-captain Nikki Bolduc (Exeter, N.H.) scored five goals and had two assists, while freshman goalie Amy Martin (Bloomfield, Mich.) made 15 saves as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team defeated Vermont, 13-11, on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action in the home-opener at the Hart Turf Field. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 1-6 overall, while the Catamounts fall to 4-2 overall.

Bolduc leads the team this season with 13 goals, four assists and 17 points. Sophomore Katie Gardner (Garden City, N.Y.) had three goals and two assists for five points, while senior Kristine Corkum (Ipswich, Mass.) netted three goals. Senior Kelly Winslow (Wrentham, Mass.) and freshman Meg O'Leary (Longmeadow, Mass.) each scored one goal.

Vermont was led by Kristen Millar's four goals, while Alison Haigh had three goals and Sara Buxton had two.

The Catamounts jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Bolduc scored to make it a 2-1 game. After Vermont scored two straight goals, the Crusaders answered back with two goals by Gardner. Her first goal came on a free position shot. The Catamounts then increased their lead to 5-3, but Corkum and O'Leary tied the game at 5-5. O'Leary's goal was assisted by Bolduc. After Buxton gave Vermont a 6-5 advantage, the Crusaders scored four unanswered goals to take a 9-6 lead into the half. Bolduc scored with an assist by Gardner at 11:25 and then scored again at 9:19, while Corkum netted her second goal of the game with 2:29 left on the clock. Bolduc scored her fourth goal of the contest with an assist by Gardner with 1:28 remaining in the half.

Vermont opened the second half with three straight goals to tie the game at 9-9, but the Crusaders answered back with three goals of their own to move out to a 12-9 lead. The first goal was scored by Winslow off a pass by Bolduc. Then Bolduc and Corkum each scored. Corkum's goal was the game-winner. After the Catamounts made it a 12-11 game, Martin made a big save off a free position shot by Buxton with 2:18 remaining in the game to keep the score 12-11. With 58 seconds left, Gardner scored to give the Crusaders the 13-11 victory.

With her 15 saves, Martin earned her first collegiate win, while Meaghan Hanley stopped four shots for Vermont in the first 20:41, while Ali Trainor made five saves in the final 39:19. The Crusaders had 28 shots and picked up 14 ground balls, while the Catamounts had 30 shots and also had 14 ground balls. Holy Cross went 1-10 on free position shots and Vermont went 3-9.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, March 22, when they host Patriot League opponent Bucknell at the Hart Turf Field at noon.
