Volleyball Falls To Iona, 3-2, In Season-Opener

The Lead: Junior Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) led the Crusaders with 21 kills, but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Iona, 3-2, at the Hampton Inn-vitational at the Chace Athletic Center in the season-opener for both teams.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Junior Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) recorded a double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs, while freshman Caroline Wells (Greensboro, N.C.) also posted a double-double in her debut with 19 assists and 12 digs. Freshman Lynsey Petersen (Palos Verdes, Calif.) posted eight kills and 13 digs, while junior Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) led the team with 14 digs. Freshman Kristen Somerville (Chicago, Ill.) led the Crusaders with five blocks.    
  • Iona was led by Claire Archibald who posted 16 kills, while Emma Rose tallied 46 assists and Jessica Paolucci had 25 digs.

 BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Popp now has 998 career digs.
  • Sifferlen’s 21 kills marks the second time in her career she has posted over 20 kills. She tallied 23 kills versus Hartford on Sept. 9, 2014.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With Holy Cross leading the first set by an 18-16, the Crusaders then won seven of the next eight points for the 25-17 opening set victory. Popp clinched the set with a service ace.
  • With the second set tied at 25-25, two straight kills by the Gaels gave Iona the 27-25 win.
  • After the Crusaders went up by a 19-9 score in the third set, the Gaels won 16 of the next 17 points to take the third set, 25-20.
  • With the fourth set tied at 24-24, Sifferlen tallied two straight kills to give the Crusaders the 26-24 win to force the fifth set.
  • With the fifth set tied at 7-7, the Gaels won eight of the last 10 points to secure the match-clinching 15-9 win. Mia Bonsignore tallied a kill on match point.

 UP NEXT

  • The Crusaders return to action tonight, Friday, Aug. 28, when it takes on tournament host Bryant at 7:00 p.m. The Crusaders will conclude their action in the Hampton Inn-vitational on Saturday, Aug. 29 versus Quinnipiac at 1:00 p.m.
