Volleyball Falls To Fairfield In Four Sets

  • The Lead: Junior Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) and freshman Lynsey Petersen (Palos Verdes, Calif.) each posted double-doubles, but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Fairfield, 3-1, at the Fairfield Invitational at Alumni Hall on Friday afternoon by scores of 26-28, 25-22, 29-27 and 25-20

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sifferlen notched a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs, while Petersen also registered a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. Junior Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) led the Crusaders with 16 digs, while Freshman Caroline Wells (Greensboro, N.C.) led the team with 19 assists. Junior Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the Crusaders with nine blocks.
  • Megan Theiller led the Stags with 17 kills, while Skyler Day led the team with 16 digs. Kiley Lingenfelter registered a team-leading 40 assists for Fairfield.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Sifferlen’s double-double was her second of the season, and the 12th of her career.
  • Petersen now has two double-doubles this season.
  • Welsch’s nine blocks were a career-best.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sifferlen led the Crusaders with six kills, as they rallied from a 23-14 deficit to take the first set 28-26.
  • Holy Cross battled back from a seven point deficit in the second set, but were eventually edged by the Stags, 25-22.
  • After the Stags notched the first five points of the third set, the Crusaders rallied with eight straight points and maintained the lead for the majority of the set. In the end, Fairfield was able to force extra time and won the set 29-27.
  • Fairfield edged Holy Cross in the fourth set by a score of 25-20. Throughout the set, the lead never exceeded more than five points.

UP NEXT

  • The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, September 5, as they take on New Hampshire in their second match of the Fairfield Invitational at 10:00 a.m.
