Volleyball Falls To Army West Point In Patriot League-Opener

The Lead: Junior Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) tallied 16 kills, but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Army West Point, 3-0, by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-16, on Tuesday night in the Patriot League season-opener for both teams.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Junior captain Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) led the team with 14 assists, while sophomore M.C. Magner (Northfield, Ill.) led the Crusaders with 19 digs. Freshman Lynsey Petersen (Palos Verdes, Calif.) posted eight kills, while junior Emily Popp (Clarkston, Mich.) had double-digit digs with 10.
  • Vanessa Edwards posted a double-double for the Black Knights with 36 assists and 20 digs. Nicole Perri led the Black Knights with 16 kills and Carolyn Bockrath totaled 13 kills with an outstanding .765 hitting percentage.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Popp now has 1,109 career digs moving her to sixth all-time in program history.
  • Sifferlen has posted double-digit kills this season in 11 of the 13 matches so far. She entered the match leading the Patriot League with 3.61 kills per set. Tonight she averaged an outstanding 5.33 kills per set as she is now averaging 3.71 kills per set for the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With the first set tied at 17-17, the Black Knights won seven straight points to move out to a 24-17 lead. But the Crusaders responded with four consecutive points to cut the Black Knights’ lead to 24-21, but Army West Point was able to clinch the first set on their fifth set point for the 25-21 victory.  
  • With the Crusaders trailing the second set by a 23-19 score, they won three straight points to make it a 23-22 contest. But a kill each by Perri and Vanessa Wesley gave Army West Point the 25-22 win.
  • The Black Knights led the third set by as many as 13 points at 23-10 and went onto win 25-16 to earn the victory.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to play Patriot League opponent Colgate on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 4:00 p.m., at Cotterell Court.
