Volleyball Falls To Bucknell, 3-1

  • The Lead: Holy Cross freshman Lynsey Petersen (Palos Verdes, Calif.) recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs, but the Crusaders were defeated by Bucknell, 3-1, in Patriot League volleyball action on Friday evening at the Hart Center Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both teams traded points in the opening set, as the score was tied 17-17. Bucknell, however, ended the set on an 8-2 rally to claim the first point of the match.
  • The Bison jumped out with the 10-6 lead in the second set and kept the four-point cushion at 15-11. Holy Cross, however, rallied back and tied the set at 18-18. Bucknell would break the stalemate and end the set on a 7-3 spurt to claim the second point of the match, 25-20.
  • In the third set, the Crusaders gained the early 9-5 advantage. An 8-1 run by the Bison, however, gave the visitors the 13-10 lead. Holy Cross rallied back to tie the game at 16-16, as the two teams traded points to make the score 22-22. The Crusaders ended the set on a 3-1 run and clinched the point on a kill by Petersen to make the match 2-1.
  • With the score tied at 6-6 in the fourth set, Bucknell used a 6-3 spurt to gain the 12-9 lead. The Crusaders cut the deficit to 14-13, but a 7-2 run by the Bison put them ahead 21-15. The margin was too much for the Crusaders to overcome, as Bucknell won the fourth set, 25-19.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • In addition to Petersen for Holy Cross, junior Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) tallied a double-double with 16 digs and 14 kills. Freshman Caroline Wells (Greensboro, N.C.) posted 19 assists and 13 digs.
  • Sophomore M.C. Magner (Northfield, Ill.) totaled a team-high 27 digs, while junior Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) led the squad with 22 assists.
  • Bucknell’s Meghan Wentzel posted a game-high 50 assists, while Karen Campbell led the Bison with 16 kills.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Sifferlen became the eighth player in program history to record 700 career kills, as she now has 713 as a Crusader.
  • McKernan moved into sixth place on the all-time career assists list, as she now has accumulated 1,547 helpers at Holy Cross.
  • The double-double for Petersen was her sixth of the season, while Wells’ was her second of the year. Sifferlen tallied her fifth of the season and the 15th of her career.
