Volleyball Falls To American

The Lead: Junior Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) posted a double-double but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to American, 3-0, by scores of 25-19, 26-24 and 25-14 on Friday night.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sifferlen notched a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs, while Sophomore M.C. Magner (Northfield, Ill.) tallied a team-best 16 digs.
  • Carmen Unzue led the Eagles with 11 kills. Kennedy Etheridge posted a double-double with 32 assists and 12 digs, while Allison Cappellino also tallied a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Sifferlen’s double-double was her seventh this season and the 17th of her career.
  • Sifferlen now has 342 kills this season, which are seventh all-time in school history. Her 3.89 kills per set are sixth all-time for a season.
  • Sophomore Mary Mullen (Mendota Heights, Minn.) has 79 blocks this season which are tied for eighth all-time in program history. Her 0.98 blocks per set are tied for second.
  • Magner’s 4.15 digs per set this season are fourth all-time in school history.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With the first set tied at 15-15, the Eagles then won 10 of the next 14 points to earn the 25-19 win. Sifferlen and Unzue each tallied five kills.
  • With the Eagles leading the second set 24-22, the Crusaders took the next two points to tie the set at 24-24. But a kill by Unzue and then a kill by Shelby Vlaanderen gave American the 26-24 victory. Unzue had six kills, while junior Natalie Welsch (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tallied four kills.
  • American won the match by taking the third set, 25-14.   

UP NEXT

  • The Crusaders will play their last home match of the season when they return to action on Saturday, Oct. 31, when they host Loyola (Md.) at 6:05 p.m. on Senior Night. Senior Emily Oliver (Carlsbad, Calif.) will be honored before the match.

COSTUME CONTEST:

  • Kids and students are encouraged to attend Saturday’s match in-costume for Halloween. The fan who wears the best costume will receive a special surprise!
