Volleyball Falls To Navy, 3-1

The Lead: Junior Katie McKernan (Sylvania, Ohio) posted a double-double but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Navy, 3-1, by scores of 25-18, 26-28, 25-15 and 27-25 on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • McKernan tallied 12 digs and 29 assists. Junior Mandy Sifferlen (Sudbury, Mass.) posted a team-best 13 kills, while sophomore M.C. Magner (Northfield, Ill.) had a team-leading 16 digs. Sophomore Mary Mullen (Mendota Heights, Minn.) posted a team-best four blocks. Freshman Lynsey Petersen (Palos Verdes, Calif.) totaled 12 kills.
  • Gaby Smith tallied a double-double for the Mids with 11 kills and 14 digs. Dorothy Murray led the team with 15 kills. Patricia Mattingly totaled 48 assists. Sydney Shearn posted 23 digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • McKernan's double-double was her seventh of the season and 27th of her career.
  • Sifferlen now has 388 kills on the season, which are the fourth-best in Crusader history. Her average of 3.88 kills per set this season is also the sixth-best by a Crusader.
  • Sifferlen now has 815 career kills, placing her at sixth-best all-time in school history.
  • Mullen now has 88 blocks this season, which are sixth-best in school history. Her 0.95 blocks per set this season are fourth-best all-time in school history.
  • Magner has 374 digs this season which are ninth all-time in program history. Her 4.16 digs per set are fourth all-time.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Mids took the first set, 25-18, as Murray tallied four kills.
  • Sifferlen led the team with six kills as the Crusaders won the second set by a 28-26 score. With the set tied at 26-26, the Crusaders won the next two points to earn the win. Petersen tallied a kill on set point to clinch the set.
  • Navy won the third set, 25-15, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • With the fourth set tied at 24-24, the Mids won the next two points to take the set, 26-24 to win the match.

UP NEXT

  • The Crusaders return to action on Friday, Nov. 13, when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Lehigh at 7:00 p.m.
