Women's Lacrosse Defeated By UMass

The Lead: Nicole Troost scored five times for the Minutewomen as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to UMass, 16-5, in the season-opener for both teams on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Minutewomen scored two early goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead with 25:25 remaining. Hannah Murphy netted the first one, followed by Holly Turner.
  • Senior Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored the first goal for the Crusaders at the 23:27 mark on a free position shot.
  • However, UMass then posted the next five goals to take a 7-1 lead with 6:29 left before halftime.
  • Freshman Keely Connors (Bedford, N.Y.) found the back of the net with 4:41 left to play in the first half to cut the deficit to five goals at the break.
  • The Minutewomen started the second half, scoring six goals, increasing their lead to 13-2 with 17:32 left to play.
  • Holy Cross netted three straight goals to make the score 13-5. Senior captain MacKenzie Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md.) led off with the first score with 15:10 left on the clock. Freshman Alexis Leighton (Garden City, N.Y.) followed with another score at the 12:48 mark. Freshman Molly Pfaff (Long Beach, N.Y.) earned the final Crusader goal of the night with 11:32 remaining in the game. Sophomore Stephanie Ford (Summit, N.J.) posted an assist.
  • The Minutewomen tallied three more goals for the 16-5 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • UMass outshot Holy Cross, 30-13.
  • Sam Walters made three saves in the first half for the Minutewomen, while Alleen Kelly made two in the second half. Sophomore goaltender Julia Maloney (Loudonville, N.Y.) made 10 saves for the Crusaders.
  • UMass picked up 22 ground balls and Holy Cross had 12.
  • The Minutewomen secured 14 draw controls, while the Crusaders posted nine.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Connors, Pfaff and Leighton each tallied their first collegiate goals.
  • Ford posted her first collegiate point.

 UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17 when they host No. 9 Boston College in the home opener.
