The Lead: The Crusaders came up short against Indiana after taking the Hoosiers to 12 innings of play at the FIU Panther Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders played through seven scoreless innings with the Hoosiers. Sophomore Mandy McCarthy (Pearl River, N.Y.) made it to third base in the top of the seventh after hitting a single, advancing on a base hit from classmate Savannah Young (Celebration, Fla.) and stealing third, but the Crusaders were unable to bring her home.
  • Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth inning, Freshman Jaclyn Brewster (Bridgeport, Conn.) doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a follow-up single from classmate Taylor Wahler (Inman, S.C.). Brewster would reach home plate on a wild pitch to give Holy Cross the lead.
  • Indiana was able to tie the game back up in the bottom of the inning after loading the bases with one out and bringing a runner home with an RBI single. Senior pitcher Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) was able to keep the game tied by forcing the next batter to foul out to third base, and striking out the following batter.
  • The Crusaders battled through the next three innings, allowing the Hoosiers to notch just two hits and get two runners on base.
  • Indiana would end the game with a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the 12th inning.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Indiana outhit the Crusaders 13-8 through 12 innings of play.
  • The Hoosiers left 12 runners on base, while Holy Cross left seven runners on.

  • Brewster, Wahler, and junior Emily Krisanda (Oak Hill, Va.) were all 2-for-5 on the day. Krisanda and Wahler each had two base hits, while Brewster had a single and a double.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • This was the first time in program history the Crusaders had faced a Big Ten school.
