Women's Lacrosse Falls To Sacred Heart

The Lead:  Senior captain Margie Smith (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) posted a hat-trick, but the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team fell to Sacred Heart, 14-10, at Holy Cross Field on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

•   Junior Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.) scored the first goal of the contest for the Crusaders to put Holy Cross on top, 1-0 with 28:43 left in the first half. MacKay drove towards the net with the ball, finishing the goal from two yards out. Freshman Molly Pfaff (Long Beach, N.Y.) earned the assist on the play.

•   The Pioneers responded with two free position goals at the 27-minute mark to take the 2-1 lead.

•   Freshman Keely Connors (Bedford, N.Y.) notched the equalizer goal with 25:27 left to play in the first half.

•   Sacred Heart answered a minute later to claim the 3-2 lead. Liljeberg posted the goal.

•   Holy Cross claimed the next two goals to go ahead by one. Smith answered at 23:26 to tie the game at 3-3. Senior Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.) had the assist. Then at 21:56, senior captain MacKenzie Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md.) scored the go-ahead goal to put the Crusaders in the lead, 4-3, with sophomore Anna Tanji (Westfield, N.J.) on the assist.

•   Sacred Heart scored the next five goals to take a four-goal lead with 12:29 left before the break.

•   Off a rebound from a shot fired off the post by Concilio, Smith picked up the ball and laced a shot from 10 yards out for a goal at the 9:19 mark to cut the deficit to three goals.

•   The Pioneers scored another free position goal by Delaney to briefly regain their four-goal lead before Smith netted a free position goal at the 6:16 mark to complete her hat-trick with the score, 9-6.

•   With one second on the clock, Jesslyn Joseph posted a free position goal for the Pioneers to take a 10-6 advantage to enter the second half.

•   Sacred Heart increased its lead to five goals early in the second half at the 26:43 mark with a score by Kylie Calandra.

•   At 23:01, junior Mary Patalita (Alexandria, Va.) found the back of the net on a free position goal to trim the Pioneers’ lead to four goals.

•   Sophomore goaltender Julia Maloney (Loudonville, N.Y.) made a series of saves at the 14:46 mark to prevent Sacred Heart from increasing its lead. Averi Farhat charged towards the net with the ball, rifling a shot from two feet away, as Maloney used her stick to deflect the ball away to safety.

•   Patalita netted another free position goal with 12:59 left in the second half to get Holy Cross with in three goals, 11-8.

•   Junior Maddie Ward (Norwell, Mass.) scored with 8:43 left in the half to complete a 3-0 spurt for the Crusaders to trail by two goals. Concilio had the assist.

•   The Pioneers posted another goal with 6:45 left to play to improve to a three-goal advantage with Liljeberg claiming the score from two yards out.

•   Connors then dived to take a low shot to scored another free postion goal for the Crusaders with 4:43 left on the clock with the score 12-10.

•   Sacred Heart posted two empty net goals at the 3:37 and 1:25 marks to win the game by four goals at the final whistle.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

•   Sacred Heart outshot Holy Cross, 29-24.

•   Maloney made 11 saves to Paige Hammick’s six.

•   The Crusaders secured 13 draw controls while the Pioneers had 12. Sacred Heart tallied 18 ground balls to the Crusaders’ 13.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

•   Smith had her third career hat-trick.

•   Concilio is just two points away from tallying 100 career points. She has 47 goals and 51 assists for the Crusaders.

•   Tanji posted her first collegiate point.

UP NEXT:

•   The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 23 when they host Bryant at 4:05 p.m.
