Softball Splits First Day Of Competition At Rebel Spring Games

The Lead: The Crusaders opened competition at the Rebel Spring Games with a narrow 3-1 defeat to Creighton.


  • The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Jaclyn Brewster (Bridgeport, Conn.) and classmate Taylor Wahler (Inman, S.C.) led off the inning with back-to-back bunt singles. Sophomore Taylor Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) would bring Brewster home on a ground out play to second base.
  • Creighton answered back in the following inning with a 2 RBI triple from Kelsey Allender.
  • The Blue Hens extended their lead to 3-1 in the top of the 6th inning, as they loaded the bases and scored a runner with a walk. With the bases loaded and no outs, sophomore Amanda Gonzalez (West Roxbury, Mass.) came in to pitch in relief, and forced the following three batters out without allowing any extra runs.


  • Creighton outhit the Crusaders 8-3.
  • The Blue Hens left nine runners on base, while Holy Cross left seven.
  • Creighton starter Michal Hylton pitched the full seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and tossed six strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Katy Watson (Bexley, Ohio) pitched five innings while allowing three runs on eight hits and dealing seven strikeouts. Gonzales pitched two innings in relief, allowing no runs and no hits while tossing one strikeout.
  • Senior Sarah Kane (Jacksonville, Fla.) was 1-for-2 on the day, while Brewster and Wahler were both 1-for-4.

The Lead: Senior Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) led the Crusaders’ offense at 3-for-4 with three extra-base hits, as Holy Cross earned its first victory of the 2016 season with a  6-1 win over Sacred Heart at the Rebel Spring Games.


  • Holy Cross jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brewster led off the game with a walk, as Jarvis brought her home with a triple in the third at-bat. Moss would help to make it 2-0 with a single to bring home Jarvis from third. After Moss stole second base, sophomore Mandy McCarthy (Pearl River, N.Y.) doubled to bring home the third run of the game. Sophomore Savannah Young (Celebration, Fla.) capped off the Crusaders’ offense in the first with a single RBI.
  • The Pioneers got a run back in the bottom of the third with a single RBI.
  • Holy Cross extended its lead in the top of the seventh inning, making it 6-1. Junior Kylee Malouf (Simi Valley, Calif.) reached base with a single, and managed to circle the bases for a score on an error in right field. With Jarvis and Wahler on second and third, Moss popped the ball out to second base, and Wahler was able to beat the ball to home plate on the throw to make it 6-1.


  • Holy Cross outhit the Pioneers 9-4.
  • The Crusaders left five runners on base, while Sacred Heart left four.
  • Senior Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) earned the win after pitching seven innings and allowing one run on four hits and dealing four strikeouts.
  • Jamie Carlson took the loss for Sacred Heart after pitching four innings and allowing four runs on six hits and tossing four strikeouts, while Emily Orosco pitched three innings in relief and allowed two runs on three hits and dealt five strikeouts.
  • Jarvis led the Crusaders’ offense, going 3-for-4 with three extra-base hits and one RBI, while Wahler also had a strong offensive game, going 2-for-4.


  • This was Durham’s second complete game of the season, and the 28th of her career.


  • The Crusaders' will return to action at the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow with a double-header against South Dakota State, with the first game scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
