Softball Drops Two Games To South Dakota State At Rebel Spring Games

GAME ONE

The Lead: Holy Cross came up short in a 3-1 contest against South Dakota State on the Crusaders’ second day of competition at the Rebel Spring Games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • South Dakota State gained the lead in the second inning with a solo shot home run from Ali Herdliska.
  • The Crusaders answered with a tying run in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Taylor Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) doubled to center field and reached third base off a sacrifice bunt from junior Emily Krisanda (Oak Hill, Va.). As junior Kylee Malouf (Simi Valley, Calif.) came into the game on a pinch run, she was able to reach home plate off a wild pitch.
  • The Crusaders’ defense held the Jackrabbits to no runs and just one hit through the following three innings.
  • South Dakota State regained their lead in the sixth inning, as they secured runs off an RBI triple, and an RBI ground-out, to give them a 3-1 lead.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Jackrabbits and Holy Cross each registered four hits in the game.
  • The Crusaders left five runners on base, while South Dakota State left three.
  • Ashlyn Bender got the win for the Jackrabbits, pitching seven innings while allowing one run on four hits and dealing seven strikeouts.
  • Senior Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) pitched a complete seven innings for Holy Cross, allowing three runs on four hits.
  • Moss led the Crusaders’ offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a single.

Location: Kissimmee, Fla. (Oren Brown Field)
The Lead: Moss and Krisanda each went 3-for-4, but the Crusaders fell to South Dakota State in their second game against the Jackrabbits on Monday at the Rebel Spring Games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) reached base on a walk, and advanced to second base as Moss singled to left field. Sophomore Mandy McCarthy (Pearl River, N.Y.) hit a single to left field in the next at-bat to bring Jarvis home.
  • The Crusaders extended their lead by one run in the top of the third. After freshman Taylor Wahler (Inman, S.C.) reached on fielder’s choice, Jarvis hit a strong double to center field that brought Wahler to home plate.
  • The Jackrabbits came back with an answer in the bottom of the inning, notching three runs.
  • In the following inning, Malouf would pinch run for Krisanda and cross home plate on a ground out to second base from sophomore Gabby Muniz (Rockport, Mass.), tying the game at three runs to each side.
  • South Dakota State notched a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead.
  • In the sixth inning, senior Becky Geddes (Cumberland, R.I.) stepped up to the plate to pinch hit for Muniz, and brought home Krisanda from second.
  • In the bottom of the inning, the Jackrabbits extended their lead with three more runs to make it 8-4.
  • Krisanda registered an RBI single in the top of the seventh, but the Crusaders were unable to overcome their deficit.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross outhit South Dakota State 12-8.
  • The Crusaders left nine runners on base, while the Jackrabbits left seven.
  • Bryana Clark earned the win for South Dakota State, pitching seven innings while allowing five runs on 12 hits and tossing four strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Amanda Gonzalez (West Roxbury, Mass.) took the loss for the Crusaders after pitching three innings in relief while allowing four runs on five hits. Sophomore Katy Watson (Bexley, Ohio) pitched the first three innings, allowing four runs (one unearned) on three hits.
  • Moss and Krisanda both led the Crusaders’ offense, going 3-for-4 in the game. Sophomore Savannah Young (Celebration, Fla.) also had a strong game at the plate, going 2-for-3.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders will return to action on Wednesday, as they resume play at the Rebel Spring Games with games against Creighton (1:30 p.m.) and Drexel (3:45 p.m.).
