Women’s Lacrosse Falls To Davidson, 8-7

The Lead: Freshmen Keely Connors (Bedford, N.Y.) and Alexis Leighton (Garden City, N.Y.) each scored two goals for the Crusaders but the Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team fell to Davidson, 8-7, in non-conference action on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders took an early 2-0 lead with goals by senior Margie Smith (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Leighton.
  • Morgan Burch then found the back of the net for the Wildcats with 17:22 left in the first half. But goals by Leighton and Connors gave the Crusaders a 4-1 lead at the half.
  • Davidson then netted the first three goals of the second half to tie the contest at 4-4.
  • Junior Maddie Ward (Norwell, Mass.) gave the Crusaders a 5-4 lead with a goal with 20:20 remaining in the second half. Senior Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.) posted an assist. After a goal by the Wildcats, sophomore Stephanie Ford (Summit, N.J.) scored off a pass by Ward as the Crusaders took a 6-5 lead with 14:31 left.
  • Just 1:15 later, the Wildcats tied the game with a free-position goal by Emma Sissman. Christine Molinari then scored with 5:05 remaining to give Davidson a 7-6 advantage. The Wildcats then increased their lead to 8-6 with a goal by Lucy Sexton with 1:05 left.
  • Connors made it an 8-7 contest when she scored with just 38 seconds remaining.
  • Ward then won the ensuing draw control as the Crusaders took a timeout with 32 seconds left. But the Crusaders were unable to find the equalizer for the 8-7 final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Davidson outshot Holy Cross, 24-21.
  • Sophomore goalie Julia Maloney (Loudonville, N.Y.) made seven saves, while Rose Woolson posted nine saves.
  • The Wildcats secured 12 draw controls to the Crusaders’ five.
  • Holy Cross tallied 20 ground balls, while Davidson had 14.
  • The Crusaders went 1-2 on free-position shots, while the Wildcats went 1-1. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Concilio has at least one point in 12 straight games.
  • Senior captain Casey Drollinger (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) posted a team-best three caused turnovers and now has 46 for her career, which are ninth all-time in program history.
