Softball Drops A Pair Of Games At Stony Brook Invitational

GAME ONE

The Lead: The Crusaders opened day two of the Stony Brook Invitational with a narrow 2-1 loss to the Seawolves on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross took an early lead in the top of the first inning. After freshman Taylor Wahler (Inman, S.C.) reached base on an infield single and senior Emily Jarvis (Hopkinton, Mass.) advanced her two bases with a double to left field, sophomore Taylor Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) brought her home on a fielder’s choice play and grabbed the RBI.
  • Stony Brook answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning with an inside-the-park home run that brought two runners home.
  • Senior pitcher Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) and the Crusaders’ defense shined in the remaining five innings, allowing just one hit with no runs scored and only two Stony Brook runners to reach the bases.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross outhit the Seawolves 4-3.
  • The Crusaders left five runners on base, while Stony Brook left two.
  • Durham took the loss after pitching six innings and allowing two runs on three hits.
  • Jane Sallen earned the win for Stony Brook, pitching seven innings and allowing one run on four hits.
  • Moss and sophomore Mandy McCarthy (Pearl River, N.Y.) led Holy Cross with four putouts each.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Jarvis’ double in the first inning was her team-leading seventh extra-base hit of the season. She has six doubles with one triple on the year.

GAME TWO

 Fairfield 10, Holy Cross 2 (5 innings)
Pitching Decision: W: Lauren Falkanger (4-2) | L: Amanda Gonzalez (0-3)
Time: 2:30 p.m.
Location: Stony Brook, N.Y. (University Field)
The Lead: Freshman Jaclyn Brewster (Bridgeport, Conn.) went 3-for-3 with an RBI, but the Crusaders fell to Fairfield by a score of 10-2 in their second game of the day at the Stony Brook Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Stags started the game with a strong offensive showing in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs off four hits.
  • The Crusaders added their first run of the game in the top of the third. Senior Hailey Mullen (Plainville, Mass.) reached base on an infield single, and found home plate as Brewster doubled to center field in the next at-bat and registered the RBI.
  • Fairfield answered with two more runs in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Holy Cross notched its second run in the contest as Moss hit a solo shot home run to center field in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Fairfield capped off its offensive efforts with four runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Stags outhit Holy Cross 14-7.
  • Fairfield left five runners on base, while the Crusaders left four.
  • Sophomore Amanda Gonzalez (West Roxbury, Mass.) allowed four runs on four hits in the first inning, as sophomore Katy Watson (Bexley, Ohio) pitched 3.2 innings in relief, allowing six runs on 10 hits.
  • Lauren Falkanger earned the win for Fairfield, pitching five innings while allowing two runs on seven hits.
  • Brewster led the Crusaders’ offense, going 3-for-3 an RBI.
  • Freshman Savannah Young (Celebration, Fla.) led Holy Cross with four putouts.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Moss’ home run in the fourth inning was her first of the season, and the third of her career.

SUNDAY’S GAME CANCELLED:

  • Due to the expected inclement weather, The Crusaders’ final game at the Stony Brook Invitational on Sunday has been cancelled. 

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders are scheduled to host UMass Lowell in their home-opener this Tuesday, March 22, with a double-header beginning at 2:35 p.m. at Freshman Field.
