Softball Drops First Two Games At Bucknell

The Lead: Freshman Taylor Wahler (Inman, S.C.) registered two RBIs and scored a run, but the Crusaders fell in the first game of their weekend series against Bucknell to open Patriot League play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Bison drove in the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single.
  • The Crusaders gained their first lead of the game in the next inning with a pair of runs. With sophomore Gabby Muniz (Rockport, Mass.) on first with two outs, freshman Jaclyn Brewster (Bridgeport, Conn.) doubled to left field to advance her to third. In the next at-bat, Wahler hit a single up the middle of the field to bring both runners home.
  • Bucknell would tie the game up in the fifth inning with an RBI single off a bunt, before adding three runs in the sixth inning to regain the lead.
  • The Crusaders added one more run in the seventh inning. With two outs, Wahler doubled to left center, and crossed home in the next at-bat as junior Emily Krisanda (Oak Hill, Va.) reached on an error in center field.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Bucknell outhit the Crusaders 8-5.
  • Holy Cross left seven runners on base, while the Bison left six runners on base.
  • Sophomore Katy Watson (Bexley, Ohio) pitched six innings while allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits.
  • Dana Nielsen earned the win for Bucknell, pitching seven innings while allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits.
  • Wahler was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Taylor Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) also had a strong game at the plate, batting 2-for-4.
  • Senior Sarah Kane (Jakcksonville, Fla.) led the Crusaders with eight putouts.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Kane’s eight putouts in the game were a season-high.

GAME TWO

Pitching Decision: W: Amanda Fazio (7-6) | L: Gennifer Durham (3-8)
Time: 2:00 p.m.
Location: Lewisburg, Pa. (Becker Field)
The Lead: Holy Cross dropped game two of its weekend series at Bucknell by a score of 5-1 on Saturday afternoon in Lewisburg, Pa.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Senior Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) registered four strikeouts in the first three innings, as the Crusaders started strong on defense, allowing only two hits in that time.
  • Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, as Brewster hit an infield single and was brought home by an RBI triple to left center from Wahler.
  • Bucknell tied the game up with a solo shot home run in the fourth inning.
  • The Bison put together a pair of strong innings offensively in the fifth and sixth, picking up two runs in each frame to give them the lead heading into the seventh inning.
  • The Crusaders notched two hits in the top of the seventh, but were unable to overcome the deficit.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Bucknell outhit the Crusaders 10-8.
  • The Bison left seven runners on base, while Holy Cross left six.
  • Senior Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C) pitched a full six innings, allowing five runs on ten hits and dealing four strikeouts.
  • Amanda Fazio pitched seven innings for Bucknell, allowing one run on eight hits.
  • Wahler led the Crusaders’ offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
  • Freshman Savannah Young (Celebration, Fla.) led Holy Cross with five putouts, while Krisanda and Kane each registered four.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Wahler now leads the Crusaders with a batting average of .371. She is tied for second on the team in RBIs with sophomore Mandy McCarthy (Pearl River, N.Y.) at nine.

  • The Crusaders conclude their three-game series at Bucknell on Sunday, with action beginning at 12:00 p.m.
