(Becker Field) The Lead: Freshman Taylor Wahler (Inman, S.C.) drove in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning to lead Holy Cross to a 5-4 win over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. After Wahler hit a triple to right center, junior Emily Krisanda (Oak Hill, Va.) drove her home with a ground out to second base.
Holy Cross added two more runs to extend its lead in the top of the third, as sophomore Taylor Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) drove Wahler and Krisanda home with a 2 RBI single down the left field line.
The Bison responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the Crusaders’ lead to one.
In the top of the fifth, Moss earned a sacrifice fly to bring home freshman Jaclyn Brewster (Bridgeport, Conn.) and give Holy Cross a 4-2 lead.
Bucknell scored two runners in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.
The Crusaders would regain the lead in the top of the seventh. After reaching base on a single to left field, senior Hailey Mullen (Plainville, Mass.) stole second base and reached third on the throw as Brewster flew to center field. Wahler would drive in the run with a single to right field.
After the first Bucknell batter singled in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Katy Watson (Bexley, Ohio) came in to pitch for senior Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.). The Crusaders’ defense forced two outs on a sacrifice bunt and a fly out to left field. Then, with the bases loaded on two outs, Wahler recovered a ground ball and made the play to second base for the force out to end the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Holy Cross outhit the Bison 11-10.
Bucknell left 13 runners on base, while the Crusaders left six.
Durhamearned the win after pitching 3.2 innings in relief, allowing two runs (none earned) on seven hits, while Watson earned a save after re-entering the game in the seventh, having pitched 3.1 innings in total and allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.
Dana Nielsen took the loss after pitching 3.0 innings in relief and allowing two runs on four hits, while Amanda Fazio pitched the first four innings and allowed three runs on seven hits.
Wahler was 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Moss was also perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 and leading the team with three RBIs.
Freshman Savannah Young (Celebration, Fla.) led Holy Cross with five putouts.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
Watson’s save was the first of her career.
Wahler now holds a team-leading batting average of .405 on the season. She is also now tied for the team lead with seven extra-base hits (five doubles, two triples).
With her second RBI of the game, Moss reached 20 for the season. She currently leads the team with 21 on the year.
The Crusaders are scheduled to host Central Connecticut in their home opening double-header on Friday, Apr. 1 beginning at 2;35 p.m. at Freshman Field.
