Softball Takes A Pair Of Losses To Boston University

The Lead: Sophomore Taylor Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 with a three-run homer as the Crusaders fell to Boston University, 11-4, in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader at Freshman Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Terriers took an early lead by scoring two runs on three hits in the first inning, and followed up with three more runs in the second to make it 5-0 in their favor.
  • After being held scoreless for the next two innings, Boston University added two runs in the fifth, and another in the sixth to give them an 8-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Crusaders’ offense came alive to bring in four runs. After freshman Jaclyn Brewster (Bridgeport, Conn.) and classmate Taylor Wahler (Inman, S.C.) led off the inning with a pair of singles. Senior Sarah Kane (Jacksonville, Fla.) drove in a runner with an RBI single up the middle. In the following at-bat, Moss hit a three-run homer over the right field fence to make it an 8-4 game.
  • The Terriers added three more runs off five hits in the top of the seventh to make it 11-4.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Boston University outhit the Crusaders 16-7.
  • The Terriers left 10 runners on base, while Holy Cross left four.
  • Freshman Alexandra Held (Houston, Texas) took the loss for the Crusaders, allowing seven runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings pitched.
  • Melanie Russell earned the win for the Terriers, allowing one run on two hits through 5.2 innings pitched.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Moss’ home run was her third of the season, and the fifth of her career.

The Lead: Senior pitcher Gennifer Durham (Abbeville, S.C.) posted a new season-high in strikeouts as the Crusaders took a narrow 1-0 loss to the Terriers in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Boston University took its 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI off a sacrifice bunt.
  • After giving up a 1-0 lead, Durham and the Crusaders defense had a strong outing through the next six frames, allowing no runs and just four hits in the remainder of the game.
  • The Terriers nearly added a second run in the top of the sixth, but sophomore Mandy McCarthy (Pearl River, N.Y.) recovered a ground ball and made a quick flip to home plate where senior catcher Kelsey Christensen (Hastings, Neb.) had just enough time to make the tag out before the runner could score. Christensen later ended the inning with a dive behind home plate to secure the third out on a pop-up.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Terriers outhit Holy Cross, 5-0.
  • Boston University left six runners on base, while the Crusaders left one.
  • Durham took the loss, allowing one run on five hits in seven innings pitched with seven strikeouts.
  • Lauren Hynes earned the win for the Terriers, allowing no runs and no hits through seven innings.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Durham’s seven strikeouts are a new season-high.

THE TURNPIKE TROPHY:

  • The series between the Crusaders and the Terriers is part of the inaugural Turnpike Trophy competition. Go here for the schedule and results of the Turnpike Trophy. Boston University has clinched a point in the standings with two wins in the series on Saturday.
  • There will be a MVP named after Sunday’s game.
  • This athletic series between the in-state Patriot League rivals awards points for all head-to-head victories in both the regular season and postseason, with the Turnpike Trophy going to the school which accumulates the most points at the end of the academic year.
  • After this series, the next Turnpike Trophy match-up will be on May 6-7, when the men’s and women’s track and field teams teams square off in Lewisburg, Pa. at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders are back in action tomorrow, as they conclude their three-game series with Boston University at 11:05 a.m. on Senior Day. The game start time was moved up due to the expected rain in the area tomorrow afternoon.
