The Lead: Kelly Vahos led the Dukes with 12 kills and a .348 hitting percentage as the Holy Cross volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to James Madison at Sinclair Gymnasium, as the Crusaders went 1-2 at the James Madison Invitational.


  • Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen was named to the JMU Invitational All-Tournament team.
  • Sifferlen now has  879 career kills, which ranks fourth all-time in the program’s history.
  • With a 1-2 overall record, the Crusaders are off to their best start since the 2013 season.
  • With 20 assists and 11 digs, freshman Lizzie Webb earned her second career double-double in back-to-back matches. In her debut at the James Madison Invitational, she recorded a total of 76 assists, 32 digs and seven service aces in three matches.


  • Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 13 kills and added nine digs. Freshman Alessandra Vasquez tallied four kills. Vasquez finished the James Madison Invitational with five kills.
  • Junior co-captain M.C. Magner registered 15 digs for the team lead.
  • Junior Mary Mullen recorded two blocks to lead the Crusaders, while Webb had two service aces.
  • The Dukes notched a team hitting percentage of .248, while Sarah Martin led with 32 assists and Sarah Driscoll had 21 digs.


  • With the first set tied at 9-9, the Dukes tallied of the next 16 of 22 points to win the set, 25-15.
  • The second set remained within a two-point deficit up until James Madison posted a seven-point spurt to take a 17-10 advantage. The Dukes won eight of the following 13 points to take set two, 25-15 with a team hitting percentage of .355.  
  • Trailing by five points in the third set, the Crusaders notched 10 of the next 15 points to tie the set at 15-15. Sifferlen recorded four kills, as Webb logged two service aces during this span. Winning three of the next five points, Holy Cross took an 18-17 lead. After the Dukes regained a one-point lead, the Crusaders brought the set to a 20-20 tie; however, James Madison scored five straight points to take the third set, 25-20 and win the match.

  • Holy Cross returns to action for its home opener when it hosts the Crusader Classic tournament at the Holy Cross Field House, where the team will face three foes, including Brown on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:35 p.m., followed by UMass Lowell at 2:35 p.m. and Fairfield at 5:35 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3.
