Volleyball Defeats Brown In Five-Set Thriller At The Crusader Classic

The Lead: Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 20 kills, as the Holy Cross volleyball defeated Brown, 3-2, at the Holy Cross Field House to start off the Crusader Classic. This was the first time the Crusaders beat the Bears since 1987.

  • This is Holy Cross’ first win over Brown since Oct. 20, 1987 when the Crusaders took down Brown, 3-1, as the Bears had won the last 22 matches in a row. Holy Cross is 5-27 all-time when facing Brown.
  • With a 2-2 record, the Crusaders are off to their best start since 2011.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Luisa Soares notched her first career double-double, consisting of 15 kills and 10 digs in her debut with the Crusaders.
  • Freshman setter Lizzie Webb earned her third career double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs. 


  • Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 20 kills and added eight digs to the victory.
  • Junior co-captain M.C. Magner registered 16 digs for the team lead.
  • Webb led the team with 42 assists and four service aces. She leads the Crusaders with 11 service aces on the season.
  • Makena Ehlert led the Bears with 20 kills, a .562 hitting percentage and 15 digs.


  • Trailing 18-10 in the first set, the Crusaders scored four of the next six points to trim the deficit to five. However, Brown would tally all but two of the final points to take the opening set, 25-16.
  • Leading the second set by one point, Holy Cross used a 9-4 run to extend out to a 15-10 lead. Sifferlen had three kills during this span. The Bears then scored nine of the next four points to tie the match at 19-19. However, the Crusaders never lost the lead, winning six points, while the Bears won four, as Holy Cross won the second set, 25-23.
  • Down by five in the third set with the score, 15-10, the Crusaders had an 9-4 spurt to cut Brown’s lead to tie the match, 19-19. Holy Cross scored just two more times, as the Bears scored the rest to take set three, 25-21, moving ahead 2-1 in the set.
  • The fourth set remained within a two-point margin with the match tied 17-17. Holy Cross took three straight points to lead 20-17. The Crusaders rallied for five of the final nine points for the 25-21 set four win, bringing the match to the deciding fifth set.
  • Brown had a 5-1 lead to start the fifth set before Holy Cross tied it up at 5-5 with sophomore Lynsey Petersen recording two service aces during this time. The Crusaders went on a 6-1 surge to take the lead with the score, 11-7. The Crusaders refused to look back from there, winning five of the last seven points, as Sifferlen hit the final kill with the Crusaders taking set five, 15-10.


  • Holy Cross returns to action in the Crusader Classic at the Holy Cross Field House tomorrow when the Crusaders face UMass Lowell at 2:35 p.m. and Fairfield at 5:35 p.m.
