The Lead: Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen made the Crusader Classic All-Tournament team and led the Crusaders with 32 kills on the day, but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to UMass Lowell and Fairfield by scores of 3-0 at the Holy Cross Field House to conclude the Crusader Classic.

 BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Junior middle hitter Mary Mullen now has 193 career blocks, which rank seventh all-time in program history.
  • With 17 kills and 11 digs in the match versus Fairfield, Sifferlen notched her 22nd career double-double.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 32 kills and added 13 digs.
  • Junior co-captain M.C. Magner registered 18 digs for the team lead.
  • Webb led the team with 54 assists.
  • Masha Yelsukova notched 17 kills to lead the River Hawks, as Lindsey Visvardis led UMass Lowell with 23 digs.
  • For Fairfield, Megan Theiller posted a .429 hitting percentage with 13 kills, and Mallory Betchtold led the team with 15 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED VERSUS UMASS LOWELL:

  • Holy Cross notched the first three points in the first set before UMass Lowell tied it up. The set would remain within a two-point margin, as the Crusaders never lost their lead until it was tied up at 19-19. The River Hawks then tallied five straight points to take a 24-19 lead. A kill by Sifferlen cut the lead to four points, however, UMass Lowell scored on a kill to take set one, 25-20.
  • With the second set tied, 10-10, the River Hawks notched nine of the next 13 points to lead 19-13. Holy Cross closed the gap to four points (20-16), but the River Hawks used a 3-1 spurt to move out to a 23-17 lead. Holy Cross registered three more points, as UMass Lowell won set two, 25-20.
  • With the third set tied, 14-14, the River Hawks notched five straight points to extend out to a 19-14 lead. Holy Cross then tallied seven of the following 11 points to cut the deficit to one point with the score, 22-21. However, UMass Lowell won three of the final five points to win the final set, 25-23.

 HOW IT HAPPENED VERSUS FAIRFIELD:

  • The Stags led by two points to start the opening set before scoring 15 of the next 26 points to jump ahead to a 21-13 lead. Fairfield won four of the final six points to take set one, 25-15.
  • In the second set, the Stags led 7-3 before the Crusaders closed the gap to one point with the score, 8-7. Fairfield won 12 of the next 15 points to extend out to a 20-13 lead. A kill by sophomore Kristen Somerville put the Crusaders within six; however, Holy Cross would get no closer, as Fairfield won five of the remaining seven points to win set two, 25-17.
  • The Stags won 20 of the first 27 points of set three to lead 20-7. Fairfield went on to win five of the last nine points for the 25-11 win in the third set.

  UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Sept. 9-10 when the Crusaders compete in the Friar Classic. On the road in Providence, R.I., the team will face host Providence at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 9 before taking on Quinnipiac at 1:30 p.m. and La Salle at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 10.
