Volleyball Defeated By Providence At The Friar Classic

The Lead: Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen  led the Crusaders with 10 kills and 19 digs, but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Providence, 3-0 at the Friar Classic at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders went up 4-1 to start the first set before the Friars took the next three points to tie the set at 4-4. The set would remain within a two-point deficit until Providence used a 4-0 spurt to take an 11-8 lead. The Crusaders then rallied for nine of the next 13 points scored to jump ahead, 17-15, as freshman setter Lizzie Webb led the way with a pair of service aces during this span. Providence then won 10 of the final 12 points to take set one, 25-19.
  • Trailing 8-5 in the second set, Holy Cross scored five of the next six points to take a 10-9 lead. The Friars answered with a 4-1 surge to regain a three-point advantage (13-10). The Crusaders tallied the following two points to cut the margin to one point, but the Friars took seven of the next nine points to expand to a 20-14 lead. Holy Cross then used a four-point run with Sifferlen and Sophomore middle hitter Kristen Somerville posting back-to-back blocks, bringing the Crusaders within two points (20-18), as Providence took a timeout. Providence then won five of the next seven points, securing a 25-20 second set victory.
  • The Friars began the third set with an 8-1 lead. The Crusaders notched the next two points, but Providence remained ahead by at least four points until Holy Cross took five of the following seven points to close the gap to two, with the score at 14-12. The Crusaders would get no closer though, as the Friars tallied 11 of the last 15 points to win set three, 25-16 for the 3-0 match victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 10 kills and 19 digs.
  • Webb led the team with 20 assists and two service aces.
  • Somerville registered a team-lead of three blocks.
  • Cayla Veverka recorded 10 kills (.226 hitting percentage) to lead the Friars, as Michelle Cruz tallied 18 digs for the team lead in the back row.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Sifferlen has posted double digits in kills in 21 consecutive matches, while leading the
  • With 10 kills and 19 digs, Sifferlen notched her fourth double-double of the season and 23rd of her career.
  • With 20 assists and 10 digs, Webb tallied her fourth career double-double.

ON THE RADAR FOR ALL-TIME CAREER RECORDS:

  • Mullen is currently seventh all-time in Holy Cross history with 193 career blocks and needs 16 more blocks to move up to the sixth spot.
  • Sifferlen has 941 career kills, which is fourth all-time in program history. She is 122 kills away from ranking third all-time.

  • Holy Cross returns to action at the Friar Classic tomorrow afternoon with two matches. The Crusaders will face Quinnipiac at 1:30 p.m. before concluding the tournament against La Salle at 3:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
