Volleyball Sweeps La Salle At The Friar Classic

The Lead: Freshman outside hitter Luisa Soares led the Crusaders with 12 kills as the Holy Cross volleyball team took down La Salle, 3-0, to conclude action at the Friar Classic at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. 


  • Holy Cross is 2-0 all-time against La Salle. The last time the Crusaders faced La Salle was on Oct. 1, 1989 when Holy Cross won, 3-0.
  • With a 4-5 record, the Crusaders are off to their best start to a season since 2013.
  • With 11 kills and 10 digs, Sifferlen notched her sixth double-double of the season and 25th of her career.


  • Holy Cross posted a season-best 14 blocks.
  • Soares earned the team lead of 12 kills, as Sifferlen added 11 kills and 10 digs to the victory.
  • Junior co-captain libero M.C. Magner registered 13 digs for the team lead.
  • Webb led the team with 26 assists.
  • Senior defensive specialist Emily Popp led the Crusaders with two service aces and junior middle hitter Mary Mullen led the team with four blocks.
  • Catherine Edgington led the Explorers with nine kills, as Kathryn Wood had a team-best of eight digs. 


  • Leading by one point in the first set (10-9), the Crusaders tallied 10 of the next 13 points to take a 20-12 advantage. Soares and Sifferlen each had a pair of kills during this frame. Each team split five of the last 10 points with Holy Cross taking set one, 25-17.
  • With set two tied 12-12, the Explorers won eight of the next 11 points to lead, 20-15. The Crusaders then battled back to move ahead and take a 24-22 advantage, winning nine of the following 11 points. La Salle took the next two points to tie the set, 24-24. Holy Cross then rallied for three of the final four points with Soares claiming a service ace on the last Crusader point won to win the second set, 27-25.
  • Leading 9-8 in the third set, the Crusaders tallied five straight points to move out to a 14-8 advantage. The Explorers took five of the next six points to cut the margin to two points with the score, 15-13. Holy Cross stretched out to a four-point lead, scoring five of the following eight points, but La Salle used a four-point surge to tie the set, 20-20. The Crusaders jumped ahead, 23-21, before the Explorers notched three in a row to get to set point with the score, 24-23. Holy Cross fought to score four of the final five points, as Soares led the way with the last three kills with the Crusaders taking set three, 27-25 and winning the match, 3-0.


  • Popp currently ranks fourth all-time in program history with 1,218 career digs. She needs 67 more digs to be third all-time and 94 digs to set the new school record.
  • Mullen is currently seventh all-time in Holy Cross history with 199 career blocks and needs 10 more blocks to move up to the sixth spot.
  • Sifferlen has 991 career kills, which is fourth all-time in program history. She is 72 kills away from ranking third all-time.


  • Holy Cross returns home to Worcester on Tuesday, Sept. 13 when the Crusaders take on Bryant at 7:05 p.m. at the Holy Cross Field House.
