Volleyball Falls To Bryant

The Lead: Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 13 kills as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Bryant, 3-0, at the Holy Cross Field House on Tuesday night.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Sifferlen registered her 1,000th kill against Bryant, making her the fourth player in program history to reach the mark.
  • Mullen reached 200 blocks for her career, making her the sixth player in program history to reach the milestone.
  • Sifferlen has posted double digits in kills in 24 consecutive matches, while leading the team in kills for the past 18 of 19 matches.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 13 kills (.167 hitting percentage).
  • In the back row, junior M.C. Magner tallied a team lead of 12 digs.
  • At the net, sophomore Kristen Somerville led Holy Cross with three blocks, hittina a .375 with three kills.
  • Freshman setter Lizzie Webb posted 28 assists for the team lead.
  • Sara Depouw led the Bulldogs with 12 kills, while Erica Vendituoli had 16 digs, and Alexandra Lunsford registered four blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Bryant jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first set, earning a 5-0 run in the process. The Crusaders were able to hang tough with the Bulldogs, trading points throughout the remainder of the set, but they were unable to battle back against the deficit set by Bryant. The Bulldogs held on to win the first set, 25-15.
  • Both teams started out the second set strong, jumping out to a 4-4 tie. The Bulldogs then gained control of the match, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to give them a 15-6 lead over the Crusaders. The Bulldogs closed out the set by scoring eight of the last nine points to secure the 25-9 win that put them up 2-0 in the match.
  • Holy Cross started the third set strong, scoring the first five of seven points. Bryant managed to close in on the lead, but Holy Cross held the advantage until the Crusaders went up 15-12. The Bulldogs then scored 10 of the next 12 points to gain control of the set, making it 22-17 in their favor. Bryant secured three of the final four points to take the third set, 25-18.

ON THE RADAR FOR ALL-TIME CAREER RECORDS:

  • Senior defensive specialist Emily Popp  ranks fourth all-time in program history with 1,222 career digs. She needs 63 more digs to be third all-time and 90 digs to set the new school record.
  • Mullen is currently seventh all-time in Holy Cross history with 200 career blocks and needs nine more blocks to move up to the sixth spot.
  • Sifferlen has 1,004 career kills, which is fourth all-time in program history. She is 59 kills away from ranking third all-time.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action this weekend, facing three opponents at the Holly Young Invitational hosted by New Hampshire from Sept. 16-17. The Crusaders will take on New Hampshire first on Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m. before playing Idaho State at 10:00 a.m. and Sacred Heart at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.
