Volleyball Defeated By New Hampshire At The Holly Young Invitational

The Lead: Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 11 kills and 16 digs as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to New Hampshire, 3-0, at the Holly Young Invitational on Friday night.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Sifferlen has posted double digits in kills in 25 consecutive matches, while leading the team in kills for the past 19 of 20 matches.
  • With 11 kills and 16 digs, Sifferlen notched her seventh double-double of the season and 26th of her career.
  • Freshman setter Lizzie Webb tallied her sixth career double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • At outside hitter, Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 11 kills and 16 digs.
  • At the net, junior middle hitter Mary Mullen led Holy Cross with two blocks, hitting a .333 with three kills.
  • Webb posted 20 assists for the team lead and added 10 digs.
  • As a team, the Wildcats notched a .195 hitting percentage. Leading the way for New Hampshire with 15 kills was Demi Muses (.306 hitting percentage), while she finished second on the team with 18 digs. On the defensive end, Sara Carlson posted 19 digs for the team lead, while Molly Wotton had four blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Wildcats jumped out to a 8-1 lead to start the first set. The Crusaders then won four of the next six points to close the gap to five points with the score, 10-5. New Hampshire used a five-run spurt to extend to a 15-5 advantage. The Wildcats finished the set, winning 10 of the final 19 points to take set one, 25-14.
  • Trailing by four points to start the second set, Holy Cross scored five straight points to take a 7-6 lead. The set remained within a one-point deficit with several lead changes until it was tied 10-10 when New Hampshire tallied 14 of the next 19 points to take a 24-15 lead. The Crusaders then scored seven consecutive points with Sifferlen hammering three kills to lead the way and bring the Crusaders within two points. The Wildcats then scored the set point, for the 25-22 set two win.
  • Both sides started the third set strong, as New Hampshire held a one-point lead with the score, 10-9. The Wildcats then scored five of the next seven points to lead 15-11. Holy Cross continued to battle but couldn’t break the deficit, as New Hampshire secured a 25-15 third set victory and 3-0 match win.

ON THE RADAR FOR ALL-TIME CAREER RECORDS:

  • Mullen is currently seventh all-time in Holy Cross history with 202 career blocks and needs seven more blocks to move up to the sixth spot.
  • Sifferlen has 1,015 career kills, which is fourth all-time in program history. She is 48 kills away from ranking third all-time.

  • The Holy Cross volleyball team will be collecting donations for the Side-Out Foundation and its Dig Pink initiative, which works towards raising funds for breast cancer research and supporting people with the disease.
