Volleyball Falls To Idaho State In Four Sets

The Lead: Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 22 kills and a.345 hitting percentage, as the Holy Cross volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Idaho State at the Holly Young Invitational on Saturday Morning.


  • Sifferlen has posted double digits in kills in 26 consecutive matches, while leading the team in kills for the past 20 of 21 matches.
  • Freshman setter Lizzie Webb tallied her seventh career double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs.
  • Junior middle hitter Mary Mullen tallied a season-best six kills.


  • At outside hitter, Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 22 kills.
  • Junior co-captain libero M.C. Magner posted 21 digs for the team lead, while sophomore outside hitter Luisa Soares ranked second on the team with 17 digs.
  • Magner, Webb and Mullen each had three blocks to share the team lead.
  • Webb posted 38 assists for the team lead and added 10 digs.
  • Chloe Hirst led the Bengals with 13 kills, five service aces and added 18 digs to the win. In the back row, Haylie Keck led the way with 21 digs, and at the net, Brooke Pherson led Idaho State with four blocks and a .364 hitting percentage with five kills.


  • The first set remained close until the Bengals tallied four consecutive points to lead 11-5. Holy Cross answered, winning four of the following five points to cut Idaho State’s lead to three points (12-9). The Bengals held at least a three-point advantage until the Crusaders closed the gap to two points with the score, 19-17. Idaho State then won six of the last eight points to take the opening set, 25-19.
  • Each team jumped out to a good start with the second set tied, 4-4. Idaho State then won 11 of the following 15 points to take a 15-8 lead. Holy Cross then won three straight points to get within four points with the score, 15-11. Trailing 20-15, the Crusaders scored seven of the next nine points to tie the set at 22-22. After an Idaho State timeout, the Crusaders won-out the final three points to complete a six-point streak, as Soares notched a service ace on the last point to secure the 25-22 second set victory.
  • With the third set tied, 5-5, the Crusaders won four of the next five points to move ahead to a 9-6 lead, as Soares smashed two kills to lead the way in that span. The Bengals then responded and claimed 10 of the following 12 points to take a 16-11 lead. The Crusaders tallied the next five of six points with Sifferlen recording back-to-back kills to trim the deficit to one point with the score, 17-16. The Crusaders couldn’t get the edge though, as the Bengals won eight of the last 11 points to take the third set, 25-19.
  • With Holy Cross leading 5-3 in the fourth set, Idaho State used a nine-point scoring surge to take a 12-5 advantage. The Crusaders battled back for the next three points, making the score 12-8. Winning six of the next 10 points, Holy Cross got within two points with the score, 16-14. Idaho State then won nine of the concluding 12 points to win the fourth set, 25-17 and earn the 3-1 match victory.


  • Mullen is currently seventh all-time in Holy Cross history with 205 career blocks and needs four more blocks to move up to the sixth spot.
  • Sifferlen has 1,037 career kills, which are fourth all-time in program history. She is 26 kills away from ranking third all-time.


  • The Holy Cross volleyball team will be collecting donations for the Side-Out Foundation and its Dig Pink initiative, which works towards raising funds for breast cancer research and supporting people with the disease.
