Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision To Sacred Heart At The Holly Young Invitational

The Lead: Freshman setter Lizzie Webb tallied a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs, but the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Sacred Heart, 3-1, to conclude action at the Holly Young Invitational on Saturday evening.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Senior co-captain Mandy Sifferlen was named to the Holly Young Invitational All-Tournament team.
  • Sifferlen has posted double-digit kills in 27 consecutive matches, while leading the team in kills for the past 21 of 22 matches.
  • Webb tallied her eighth career double-double with her 32 assists and 11 digs.
  • Sophomore Jenna Price notched a season-best nine kills, posting a .412 hitting percentage.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • At outside hitter, Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 17 kills (.179 hitting percentage).
  • Junior co-captain libero M.C. Magner posted 18 digs for the team lead.
  • Sophomore middle hitter Kristen Somerville tallied four blocks to lead the Crusaders, registering three kills for a .250 hitting percentage.
  • Webb posted 32 assists for the team lead and added 11 digs.
  • The Pioneers had a .245 hitting percentage, as Makayla Dole led Sacred Heart with 15 kills (.235 hitting percentage), 17 digs and three service aces. Julia Murawinski had four blocks for the team lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • With the opening set tied, 13-13, the Crusaders scored three straight points to lead by three. Holding the lead, Holy Cross had a 21-16 advantage, winning four of the final six points with Sifferlen delivering a powerful kill to give the Crusaders a 25-18 first set victory.
  • Holy Cross started off the second set on top with a 4-1 lead. The Pioneers cut the Crusaders’ margin to one before Holy Cross won three of the following four points to stretch out to an 8-5 advantage. Sacred Heart tied the set at 11-11, as the match consistently remained evened out up until the score was 22-22. The Pioneers then won three of the final four points to take set two, 25-23.
  • The Crusaders led 4-1 to start the third set before Sacred Heart won 11 of the next 13 points to take a 12-6 advantage. The Crusaders battled back but could not trim the deficit, as Sacred Heart won 13 of the final 20 points to win set three, 25-13.
  • Tied 5-5 in the fourth set, Sacred Heart scored six of the next seven points to take an 11-6 lead. The Crusaders won six of the following nine points to trim the margin to two points, with the score 14-12. Holy Cross kept the set within two points until the score was 18-16. The Pioneers then won the last seven of nine points for the fourth set win and 3-1 match victory.

 ON THE RADAR FOR ALL-TIME CAREER RECORDS:

  • Senior defensive specialist Emily Popp currently ranks fourth all-time in program history with 1,248 career digs. She needs 36 more digs to be third all-time and 64 digs to set a new school record.
  • Junior middle hitter Mary Mullen is currently seventh all-time in Holy Cross history with 205 career blocks and needs four more blocks to move up to the sixth spot.
  • Sifferlen has 1,054 career kills, which are fourth all-time in program history. She is nine kills away from ranking third all-time.

  • The Holy Cross volleyball team will be collecting donations for the Side-Out Foundation and its Dig Pink initiative, which works towards raising funds for breast cancer research and supporting people with the disease.
