THE BASICS:

• Score:  Albany 45, Holy Cross 28

• Records: Holy Cross 1-2; Albany 3-0

• Location: Bob Ford Field, Albany, N.Y.

• The Lead: Senior quarterback Peter Pujals hit on 35 of 55 passes for 353 yards and three touchdowns, but the Holy Cross football team was defeated by 25th-ranked Albany 45-28 at Bob Ford Field.

 

MAN OF THE MATCH PRESENTED BY THE UNITED STATES MARINES:

• Following the contest, sophomore wide receiver Richie DeNicola was selected as the United States Marines Man of the Match.

• He finished the night with 14 receptions for 131 yards and a touchdown.

• DeNicola’s 14 catches were the second-highest single-game total in school history.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Senior wide receiver Jake Wieczorek caught eight passes for 106 yards and a score.

• Freshmen tailback Miles Alexander posted a team-best 57 rushing yards on 11 carries.

• Senior linebacker Kyle Young recorded a team-high nine tackles with one tackle for loss.

• Albany was led by Elijah Ibitokun-Hanks with 28 carries for 183 yards and four touchdowns.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The Crusaders opened the scoring at the 1:47-mark of the first quarter on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Pujals to sophomore wide receiver Jordan Montgomery.

• The Great Danes responded by scoring four touchdowns in the second quarter, to take a 28-7 halftime lead.

• Ibitokun-Hanks had a pair of rushing touchdowns in the quarter, while Neven Sussman threw two scoring strikes to Zee Roberson.

• Albany added a 42-yard Ethan Stark field goal early in the third quarter, before the Holy Cross offense came back to life.

• Pujals threw touchdown passes of 18 yards to Wieczorek and three yards to DeNicola to trim the margin to 31-21.

 • But Ibitokun-Hanks scored two more touchdowns for the Great Danes in the fourth quarter as they pulled away for the victory.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

• The touchdown reception by Montgomery was the first of his collegiate career. He also set career highs with five receptions for 48 yards.

• Both DeNicola and Wieczorek had over 100 receiving yards for the second straight week, while DeNicola had double-digit catches for the second game in a row.

• Senior tight end Lucas Nikolaisen scored the first rushing touchdown of his career on a five-yard run in the fourth quarter.

 

UP NEXT:

• Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 24, when it plays host to Dartmouth as part of Homecoming weekend. The Crusaders and the Big Green are scheduled to kick off at 1:05 p.m.
