Volleyball Falls To Colgate

The Lead: Sophomore outside hitter Luisa Soares  led the Holy Cross volleyball team with nine digs and had 10 kills, as the Crusaders took a 3-0 loss to Colgate at the Holy Cross Field House in their second Patriot League match of the season on Friday night.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Sifferlen has posted double-digit kills in 29 consecutive matches, while leading the team in kills for the past 23 of 24 matches.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • At outside hitter, Sifferlen led the Crusaders with 11 kills, while sophomore Kristen Somerville tallied four blocks at the net.
  • Freshman setter Lizzie Webb posted 17 assists for the team lead, as Soares’ nine digs were the team-best.
  • Taylor Flaherty led the Raiders with six blocks, while Kathleen Harris and Jaelah Hutchinson shared 10 kills each for the team lead. Colgate notched a .217 team hitting percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Raiders led the first set by a two-point margin before winning 12 of the next 15 points to jump ahead to an 18-8 lead. The Crusaders tallied six more points but couldn’t close the gap, as Colgate took the opening set, 25-14.
  • Trailing by four points in the second set, Holy Cross scored five of the next seven points to trim the deficit to one point, as the Raiders held a 14-13 lead. The Crusaders kept it close, but with the score, 21-16, Colgate won four of the last six points to take set two, 25-18.
  • Holy Cross started the third set with a 3-1 lead before Colgate used a 6-0 surge to move out to a 7-3 advantage. The Raiders led 16-14 before the Crusaders battled back to win three of the next four points to tie the set at 17-17. The score remained tied until Holy Cross rallied for three straight points and took a 24-21 set point advantage. Colgate then won-out the final five points of the match, as the Crusaders suffered the 26-24 third set defeat.

 ON THE RADAR FOR ALL-TIME CAREER RECORDS:

  • Senior defensive specialist Emily Popp currently ranks fourth all-time in program history with 1,261 career digs. She needs 24 more digs to be third all-time and 51 digs to set a new school record.
  • Junior middle hitter Mary Mullen is currently seventh all-time in Holy Cross history with 207 career blocks and needs two more blocks to move up to the sixth spot.
  • Sifferlen has 1,079 career kills, which are third all-time in the program’s history. She needs 167 more kills to rank second all-time. 

DIG PINK RALLY MATCH SET FOR OCT. 1

  • The Holy Cross volleyball team will be collecting donations for the Side-Out Foundation and its Dig Pink initiative, which works towards raising funds for breast cancer research and supporting people with the disease.
